Remove/install hydraulic valve clearance compensating elements - AR05.00-P-2011GZA (ML350, ML550, GL450, GL550)

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install    
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by pinching or crushing  when working on springs or spring bodies that are under tension Use only approved tensioning devices; shield off hazard area if necessary.
Inspect special tools for damage and proper operation (visual inspection).
Wear protective gloves.

DANGER Risk of injury  caused by fingers being pinched or crushed  when removing, installing or aligning hoods, doors, trunk lids, tailgates or sliding roof. Keep body parts and limbs well clear of moving parts. AS00.00-Z-0011-01A
1 Remove air filter housing   AR09.10-P-1150GZA
2 Remove cylinder head covers Right cylinder head cover AR01.20-P-5012GZA
    Left cylinder head cover AR01.20-P-5013GZA
3 Remove front covers from cylinder heads Right front cover AR01.30-P-5700GZC
    Left front cover AR01.30-P-5700GZA
4 Remove camshafts   AR05.20-P-6992GZA 
5 Take out cam follower (1) with compensating element (2) IMPORTANT When removing several compensation elements (2) make sure that the roller-type cam follower (1) with the compensation elements (2), which were not replaced, are reinstalled at the previous fitting point. Mark the cam follower (1) for the corresponding compensating element (2) if necessary.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Oil cam follower (1) and compensating element (2).
 
6 Detach clamp (3) by hand and remove compensating element (2) from cam follower (1)    
INSPECT Checking     
7 Check that compensating element (2) is functioning properly, and replace if necessary NOTES Only press compensating element (2) together hand, do not use any steel tool, otherwise the surface of the compensating element (2) can be damaged.
IMPORTANT The compensating element (2) should not allow itself to be pressed together by the normal force of the hand and also only slowly when using a strong force.
IMPORTANT Check pressure oil supply to the cylinder head if more than one compensating element (2) is faulty.
 
8 Install in the reverse order    
DANGER Risk of accident  caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury  caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

9 Check for oil leaks with engine running
