Symptom Troubleshooting

Use the chart below to verify the symptoms of the trouble in order to diagnose the appropriate area.

NOTE:

When driving on high-altitude roads, the TCM determines that the driving mode is the AAS mode, and may change to a different shift timing from the normal timing.

Vehicle does not move in D or R position	Vehicle does not move when accelerator pedal is depressed. The engine revs up but the vehicle does not move even though the accelerator pedal is depressed. Vehicle moves in P position, or parking gear does not disengage when P is disengaged	Vehicle rolls when on a downward slope in P position. Excessive creep	Vehicle accelerates in D and R position when accelerator pedal is not depressed.	(See EXCESSIVE CREEP [NJ8A (X)-EC/NN8A (X)-EC/MM8A (X)-EC] ).
No creep at all	Vehicle does not move in D or R position when idling on flat paved road.	(See NO CREEP AT ALL [NJ8A (X)-EC/NN8A (X)-EC/MM8A (X)-EC] ).
Low maximum speed and poor acceleration	Vehicle acceleration is poor at start. Delayed acceleration when accelerator pedal is depressed while driving.	(See LOW MAXIMUM SPEED AND POOR ACCELERATION [NJ8A (X)-EC/NN8A (X)-EC/MM8A (X)-EC] ).
No shifting	Single shift position only. Sometimes shifts correctly.	(See NO SHIFTING [NJ8A (X)-EC/NN8A (X)-EC/MM8A (X)-EC] ).
Does not shift to 7GR or 8GR	Vehicle does not upshift from 6GR to 7GR or 7GR to 8GR even though vehicle speed is increased. At a vehicle speed range where the transaxle should shift up to 7GR and 8GR gears in D position based on the shift pattern, the transaxle does not shift to 7GR and 8GR gears by gradually releasing the accelerator pedal. Abnormal shifting	Shifts incorrectly (incorrect shift pattern).	(See ABNORMAL SHIFTING [NJ8A (X)-EC/NN8A (X)-EC/MM8A (X)-EC] ).
Frequent shifting	Downshifting occurs suddenly even when accelerator pedal is depressed slightly in D position.	(See FREQUENT SHIFTING [NJ8A (X)-EC/NN8A (X)-EC/MM8A (X)-EC] ).
Shift point is high or low	Shift point considerably different from automatic shift diagram. Shift delays when accelerating. Shift occurs suddenly when accelerating and engine speed does not increase.	(See SHIFT POINT IS HIGH OR LOW [NJ8A (X)-EC/NN8A (X)-EC/MM8A (X)-EC] ).
No kickdown	Does not downshift when accelerator pedal is fully depressed within kickdown range.	(See NO KICKDOWN [NJ8A (X)-EC/NN8A (X)-EC/MM8A (X)-EC] ).
Engine flares up or slips when upshifting or downshifting	When shifting up while accelerating the vehicle with the accelerator pedal depressed, the engine revs. When shifting down while the vehicle is being driven normally with the accelerator pedal depressed, the engine revs rapidly. Judder when accelerating from stop	Vehicle jolts and the body vibrates when accelerating from a stop.	(See JUDDER WHEN ACCELERATING FROM STOP [NJ8A (X)-EC/NN8A (X)-EC/MM8A (X)-EC] ).
Excessive shift shock from N to D or N to R position	Strong shock is felt when shifting from N to D or N to R position at idle.	(See EXCESSIVE SHIFT SHOCK FROM N TO D OR N TO R POSITION [NJ8A (X)-EC/NN8A (X)-EC/MM8A (X)-EC] ).
Slow engaging after operating selector lever from N to D position	Slow engagement when depressing the accelerator pedal just after operating the selector lever from N to D position with the ATF temperature at 60°C {140°F} or more. Malfunction symptom only occurs once when accelerating from a standstill. Engagement after operating the selector lever from N to R position is normal. Excessive shift shock is felt when upshifting and downshifting	Excessive shift shock is felt when depressing accelerator pedal to accelerate at upshifting. During cruising, excessive shift shock is felt when depressing accelerator pedal at downshifting. Noise occurs at idle when vehicle is stopped in all positions	Transmission is noisy in all positions when vehicle idling.	(See NOISE OCCURS AT IDLE WHEN VEHICLE IS STOPPED IN ALL POSITIONS [NJ8A (X)-EC/NN8A (X)-EC/MM8A (X)-EC] ).
Noise occurs at idle when vehicle is stopped in D or R position	Abnormal noise/vibration occurs in the area around the automatic transmission while the vehicle is being driven.	(See NOISE OCCURS AT IDLE WHEN VEHICLE IS STOPPED IN D OR R POSITION [NJ8A (X)-EC/NN8A (X)-EC/MM8A (X)-EC] ).
Transmission overheats	Burnt smell emitted from the transmission. Smoke is emitted from the transmission.	(See TRANSMISSION OVERHEATS [NJ8A (X)-EC/NN8A (X)-EC/MM8A (X)-EC] ).
Engine stalls when shifted to D or R position	Engine stalls when shifting from N or P position to D or R position at idle.	(See ENGINE STALLS WHEN SHIFTED TO D OR R POSITION [NJ8A (X)-EC/NN8A (X)-EC/MM8A (X)-EC] ).
Starter does not work	Starter does not work even when in P or N position.	(See STARTER DOES NOT WORK [NJ8A (X)-EC/NN8A (X)-EC/MM8A (X)-EC] ).
Gear position indication is not displayed in manual mode/direct mode	Gear position indication is not displayed in manual mode/direct mode.	(See GEAR POSITION INDICATION IS NOT DISPLAYED IN MANUAL MODE/DIRECT MODE [NJ8A (X)-EC/NN8A (X)-EC/MM8A (X)-EC] ).
Gear position indication is displayed in any mode other than manual mode/direct mode	Gear position indication is displayed in any mode other than manual mode/direct mode. Selector lever position indication displays M/DM in any mode other than manual mode/direct mode	Selector lever position indication displays M/DM in any mode other than manual mode/direct mode. Selector ATF seeping from automatic transmission	ATF is seeping from the automatic transmission case. Foreign matter mixed with ATF is in the automatic transmission case.	(See SELECTOR ATF SEEPING FROM AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION [NJ8A (X)-EC/NN8A (X)-EC/MM8A (X)-EC] ).
Maximum speed is restricted	The vehicle speed does not increase even though the accelerator pedal is depressed.	(See MAXIMUM SPEED IS RESTRICTED [NJ8A (X)-EC/NN8A (X)-EC/MM8A (X)-EC] ).
When ATF temperature is high, vehicle slips backwards while accelerating from stop on slope	When ATF temperature is high, vehicle slips backwards while accelerating from stop on slope.
