Engine Removal/Installation - 3.0L

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. See LIFTING .
  2. Drain the engine cooling system. See ENGINE COOLANT REPLACEMENT - 3.0L .
  3. Remove the hood.
  4. Remove the upper intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLD UPPER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 3.0L .
  5. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. See AIR CLEANER OUTLET TUBE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 3.0L .
    NOTE:
    • The fan clutch has left-hand threads.
  6. Remove the fan clutch and the fan blade as an assembly. See COOLING FAN AND CLUTCH REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 3.0L .

  7. Remove the drive belt. See DRIVE BELT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 3.0L .
  8. Remove the fan shroud.

  9. Remove the radiator. See RADIATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 3.0L .
  10. Recover the A/C system. See A/C REFRIGERANT SYSTEM TESTS .
  11. Disconnect the A/C manifold and tube assembly. See A/C MANIFOLD AND TUBE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 3.0L .

  12. Disconnect the A/C manifold and tube assembly at the accumulator.

  13. Remove the nut and position the suction/discharge line aside.

  14. Remove the nut.

  15. Disconnect the A/C compressor wiring.

  16. Remove the bolt and nut.

  17. Position A/C compressor and A/C compressor mounting bracket aside as an assembly.

    • Remove the bolts.
    • Set the assembly aside.
  18. Remove the nut and position the ground cable aside.

  19. Relieve the fuel system pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELIEF .
  20. Disconnect the fuel lines. See FUEL LINE AND VAPOR LINE QUICK DISCONNECT FITTINGS .
  21. Disconnect the vacuum line.

  22. Disconnect the PCM connector.

  23. Remove the nut from the PCM harness.

  24. Remove the stud bolt and the PCM ground strap.

  25. Disconnect the generator wiring and position aside.

  26. Disconnect both front heated oxygen sensors. See HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (HO2S) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .

  27. Disconnect the transmission harness connectors.

  28. Disconnect the vacuum line to the vacuum tank reservoir.

  29. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor.

  30. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. See LIFTING .
  31. Remove the left heated oxygen sensor. See HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (HO2S) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .

  32. Disconnect the dual converter Y pipe from both exhaust manifolds. See EXHAUST MANIFOLD RIGHT HAND REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 3.0L and EXHAUST MANIFOLD LEFT HAND REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 3.0L .
  33. Remove the starter motor and the starter grounding stud bolt. See STARTER MOTOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 3.0L .
    NOTE:
    • Mark one stud and the flexplate for installation reference.
  34. Remove the torque converter nuts on automatic transmissions.

    • Remove the access plate.
    • Remove the four nuts.
  35. Remove the bolt.

  36. Remove the eight transmission-to-engine bolts.

  37. Lower the vehicle.
  38. Attach engine lifting eyes ST  303-D030 or equivalent.

  39. Remove the four nuts.

  40. Support the transmission.
  41. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
  42. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
