Removal [10/2017 - ]: Procedure

  1. REMOVE ENGINE ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to REMOVAL [10/2017 - 09/2020] , or refer to REMOVAL [09/2020 - ]

  2. REMOVE ENGINE WIRE 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 10

  3. REMOVE THROTTLE BODY WITH MOTOR ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to REMOVAL [10/2017 - 09/2020] , or refer to REMOVAL [09/2020 - ]

  4. REMOVE INTAKE AIR SURGE TANK ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 7

  5. REMOVE NO. 2 FUEL TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 5

  6. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. for Bank 1:

      Remove the 2 clips and No. 1 engine cover sub-assembly from the cylinder head cover sub-assembly.

    2. for Bank 2:

      Remove the bolt and No. 1 engine cover sub-assembly from the No. 1 fuel tube sub-assembly.

  7. REMOVE NO. 1 FUEL TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 7

  8. REMOVE NO. 1 FUEL PIPE SUB-ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 8

  9. REMOVE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY (for High Pressure) 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 9

  10. DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS 
    1. for Bank 1:
      1. Disengage the claw and disconnect the No. 6 engine wire from the cylinder head cover sub-assembly.

      2. Disengage the claw and disconnect the No. 5 engine wire from the No. 6 engine wire.

    2. for Bank 2:
      1. Disengage the claw and disconnect the No. 7 engine wire from the cylinder head cover sub-assembly LH.

      2. Disengage the clamp.

      3. Disengage the claw and disconnect the No. 8 engine wire from the No. 7 engine wire.

  11. REMOVE FUEL DELIVERY PIPE WITH SENSOR ASSEMBLY

  13. REMOVE V-RIBBED BELT TENSIONER ASSEMBLY

  15. REMOVE WATER PUMP PULLEY

  16. REMOVE NO. 6 WATER BY-PASS HOSE

  17. REMOVE NO. 2 WATER BY-PASS HOSE 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 12

  18. REMOVE NO. 3 WATER BY-PASS HOSE 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 13

  19. REMOVE NO. 2 WATER BY-PASS HOSE ASSEMBLY

  20. REMOVE WATER INLET WITH THERMOSTAT SUB-ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 17

  21. REMOVE WATER OUTLET SUB-ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 16

  22. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL SOLENOID ASSEMBLY (for Intake Side of Bank 1) 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 5

  23. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL SOLENOID ASSEMBLY (for Exhaust Side of Bank 1) 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 6

  24. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL SOLENOID ASSEMBLY (for Intake Side of Bank 2) 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 7

  25. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL SOLENOID ASSEMBLY (for Exhaust Side of Bank 2) 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 8

  26. REMOVE WIRE HARNESS CLAMP BRACKET 
    1. for 2WD:
      1. Remove the wire harness clamp bracket with the bolt from oil filter bracket sub-assembly.

    2. Remove the wire harness clamp bracket with the bolt from timing chain cover assembly.

    3. Remove the wire harness clamp bracket with the nut from timing chain cover assembly.

  27. REMOVE OIL FILTER BRACKET SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. for 2WD:
      1. Remove the oil filter bracket sub-assembly and gasket with the 2 bolts and 2 nuts.

    2. for AWD:
      1. Remove the bolt and nut the No. 1 oil filter bracket from the cooler compressor with magnet clutch assembly.

      2. Remove the oil filter bracket sub-assembly and gasket with the bolt and 2 nuts.

  28. REMOVE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY 
    1. Using SST, hold the crankshaft pulley and loosen the pulley bolt. Continue to loosen the bolt until only 2 or 3 threads are screwed into the crankshaft.

  29. REMOVE IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY

  30. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY LH 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and 2 VVT sensors from the cylinder head cover sub-assembly LH.

    2. Remove the 14 bolts and cylinder head cover sub-assembly LH from the camshaft housing sub-assembly LH.
    3. Remove the camshaft bearing cap oil hole gasket LH.

    4. Remove the 2 gaskets and cylinder head cover gasket.

  31. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and 2 VVT sensors from the cylinder head cover sub-assembly.

    2. Remove the 13 bolts and cylinder head cover sub-assembly from the camshaft housing sub-assembly RH.
    3. Remove the camshaft bearing cap oil hole gasket RH.

    4. Remove the 2 gaskets and cylinder head cover gasket.

  32. REMOVE SPARK PLUG TUBE GASKET

  33. REMOVE NO. 2 OIL PAN SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. for 2WD:
      1. Remove the 15 bolts and 2 nuts.

    3. Insert the blade of an oil pan seal cutter between the oil pans. Cut through the applied sealer and remove the No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly.

      NOTE:

      Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the oil pans.

  34. REMOVE OIL PIPE WITH STRAINER SUB-ASSEMBLY (for AWD) 
    1. Remove the 3 nuts, oil strainer pipe with strainer sub-assembly and gasket.

  37. REMOVE OIL PAN SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the 16 bolts and 2 nuts.

      HINT: 

      Be sure to clean the bolts and stud bolts and check the threads for cracks or other damage.

    2. Remove the oil pan sub-assembly by prying between the oil pan sub-assembly and cylinder block sub-assembly with a screwdriver.

      NOTE:

      Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the cylinder block sub-assembly and oil pan sub-assembly.

      HINT: 

      Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

    3. Remove the 2 O-rings from the timing chain cover sub-assembly.

  39. REMOVE TIMING CHAIN COVER PLATE

      1. Remove the 26 bolts and 2 nuts shown in the illustration.

    3. Remove the timing chain cover sub-assembly by prying between the timing chain cover sub-assembly and cylinder head sub-assembly or cylinder block sub-assembly with a screwdriver.

      NOTE:

      Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the cylinder head sub-assembly, cylinder block sub-assembly and timing chain cover sub-assembly.

      HINT: 

      Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

    4. Remove the oil pump gasket from the cylinder block sub-assembly.

  41. REMOVE TIMING CHAIN CASE OIL SEAL 
    1. Using a screwdriver and wooden block, pry out the timing chain case oil seal.

      Do not damage the surface of the oil seal press fit hole.

      HINT: 

      Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
