Rear Axle Hub: Installation

HINT

  1. INSTALL REAR AXLE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY 
    1. Hold the rear axle hub and bearing assembly between aluminum plates in a vise.
      NOTE: Do not overtighten the vise.
    2. Install the rear axle hub and bearing assembly to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with the 4 bolts

      Torque: 70 N*m (714 kgf*cm, 52 ft.*lbf)

  2. INSTALL REAR NO. 2 WHEEL BEARING DUST DEFLECTOR 
    1. Using SST and a press, install a new rear No 2 wheel bearing dust deflector to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly.

      SST 09950-70010 (09951-07150), 09951-01000 

      HINT.

      Align the hole for the rear speed sensor in the rear No 2 wheel bearing dust deflector with the rear axle carrier sub-assembly

  3. INSTALL REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Connect the rear drive shaft assembly and to the rear axle assembly
  4. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 2 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY 
    1. Temporarily tighten the rear No. 2 suspension arm assembly to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with the bolt and nut.
      NOTE: Turn the bolt while holding the nut.

      HINT

      Install the bolt from the rear side of the vehicle and temporarily tighten the bolt

  5. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 1 UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  6. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 2 UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  7. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Temporarily tighten the nut
      NOTE: Align the matchmarks on the rear suspension member and toe adjust plate.

      HINT

      Fully tighten the nut after stabilizing the suspension

    2. Install the toe control link sub-assembly with a new nut.

      Torque: 70 N*m (714 kgf*cm, 52 ft.*lbf)

  8. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 1 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  9. INSTALL NO. 3 PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the parking brake cable assembly to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with the 2 nuts

      Torque: 8.0 N*m (82 kgf*cm, 71 in.*lbf)

  10. APPLY HIGH TEMPERATURE GREASE  (See REASSEMBLY )
  11. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER SUB-ASSEMBLY  (See REASSEMBLY )
  12. INSTALL NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY  (See REASSEMBLY )
  13. INSTALL NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY  (See REASSEMBLY )
  14. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET  (See REASSEMBLY )
  15. INSTALL NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN TENSION SPRING  (See REASSEMBLY )
  16. INSTALL NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN TENSION SPRING  (See REASSEMBLY )
  17. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE INSTALLATION  (See REASSEMBLY )
  18. INSTALL REAR SPEED SENSOR 
    1. Install the rear speed sensor with the bolt A and bolt B

      Torque: Bolt A 

      6.0 N*m (61 kgf*cm, 53 in.*lbf) 

      Bolt B 

      8.5 N*m (87 kgf*cm, 75 in.*lbf)

      NOTE:
      • Prevent foreign matter from attaching to the sensor tip.
      • Do not twist the rear speed sensor when installing it.
  19. INSTALL REAR DISC  (See INSTALLATION )
  20. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY  (See REASSEMBLY )
  21. TEMPORARILY INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT NUT 
    1. Clean the threaded parts on the rear drive shaft assembly and rear axle shaft nut using a non-residue solvent
      NOTE:
      • Be sure to perform this work for a new rear drive shaft assembly.
      • Keep the threaded parts free of oil and foreign objects.
    2. Install a new rear axle shaft nut

      Torque: 290 N*m (2957 kgf*cm, 214 ft.*lbf) 

      HINT

      Stake the nut after inspecting for looseness and runout in the following steps

  22. REMOVE REAR DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY  (See DISASSEMBLY )
  23. REMOVE REAR DISC  (See REMOVAL )
  24. INSPECT REAR AXLE HUB BEARING LOOSENESS  (See ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION  )
  25. INSPECT REAR AXLE HUB RUNOUT  (See ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION  )
  26. INSTALL REAR DISC  (See INSTALLATION )
  27. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY  (See REASSEMBLY )
  28. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT NUT 
    1. Using a chisel and a hammer, stake the axle shaft nut

  29. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE AND PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL  (See ADJUSTMENT )
  30. STABILIZE SUSPENSION  (See INSTALLATION )
  31. FULLY TIGHTEN TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  32. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 1 UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  33. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 2 UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  34. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 1 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  35. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 2 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY 
    1. Fully tighten the rear No 2 suspension arm assembly with the bolt and nut

      Torque: 161 N*m (1642 kgf*cm, 119 ft.*lbf) 

      NOTE: Turn the bolt while holding the nut.

  36. INSTALL REAR SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE  (See INSTALLATION )
  37. INSTALL NO. 2 DIFFERENTIAL SUPPORT PROTECTOR  (See INSTALLATION )
  38. INSTALL REAR WHEEL 

    Torque: 103 N*m (1050 kgf*cm, 76 ft.*lbf) 

  39. INSPECT AND ADJUST REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT 

    See REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT

  40. INSPECT BRAKE WARNING LIGHT  (See ADJUSTMENT )
  41. CHECK FOR SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL
