Cylinder Head: Removal
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Perform the fuel system pressure release. Refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE .
- Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
- Drain the coolant system. Refer to
COOLING SYSTEM, STANDARD PROCEDURE
.
- Loosen the band clamp and remove the coolant reservoir supply hose (1) from the turbocharger coolant return pipe.
- Loosen the band clamp and remove the charge air cooler hose (2) from the turbocharger coolant return pipe.
- Remove the oil dipstick tube. Refer to DIPSTICK TUBE, ENGINE OIL, REMOVAL .
- Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to CONVERTER, CATALYTIC, REMOVAL .
- Remove the engine coolant manifold. Refer to MANIFOLD, COOLANT, REMOVAL

- Remove the bolt (2) and reposition the coolant hose (1).
- Remove the turbocharger oil supply and return pipes. Refer to LINES, TUBES AND HOSES, TURBOCHARGER, OIL AND COOLANT, REMOVAL

- Remove the brake vacuum hose assembly (1).
- Disconnect and reposition the B+ cable at the generator and starter, then position aside.
- Raise and support the vehicle if equipped with AWD. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE
.NOTE:
On 2WD models, these bolts are accessible from the bottom of the vehicle. AWD models must be accessed from the top of the engine.
- Remove the two bolts (1) securing the lower portion of the intake manifold to the bottom of the cylinder head.
- Remove the cylinder head cover and timing cover. Refer to COVER(S), ENGINE TIMING, REMOVAL .
- Remove the timing chain. Refer to CHAIN AND SPROCKETS, TIMING, REMOVAL
.
- Remove the bolt and bushing (2) and remove the cam chain tensioner arm (1).
- Remove the bolts (3) and remove the cam chain guide (4).
- Remove the camshafts with the variable valve timing phasers attached. Refer to CAMSHAFT, ENGINE, REMOVAL .
- Remove the rocker arms and hydraulic lifters. Refer to LIFTER(S), HYDRAULIC, REMOVAL .
- Remove the intake manifold. Refer to MANIFOLD, INTAKE, REMOVAL

- Disconnect the wire harness connector (1) from the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensor (2).
- Disconnect the fuel pressure regulator wire harness connector (3).
- Disconnect the front fuel supply pipe quick-coupling (2) from the fuel injection pump (1).
- Disconnect the intake Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor wire harness connector (1).
- Disconnect the exhaust CMP sensor wire harness connector (5).
- Remove the three screws (2) from the wire harness tray.
- Disengage the two wire harness retainers (3) from the turbocharger coolant supply pipe.
- Remove the bolt (4) and the wire harness ground lug.
- Disengage the two wire harness retainers (6) from the cylinder head.
- Remove the outer head bolt (2) securing the cylinder head to the crankcase.
- Remove the ten inner head bolts (1) and remove the cylinder head assembly with the turbocharger attached.
- Remove the head gasket (1) from the locating pins (2).
- Check the integrity of the locating pins (2).
- Using suitable pliers, remove the oil supply filter (1).
- If required, remove the following components from the cylinder head:
- Intake and exhaust CMP sensors. Refer to SENSOR, CAMSHAFT POSITION, REMOVAL .
- EGR temperature sensor. Refer to SENSOR, EGR TEMPERATURE, REMOVAL .
- Fuel injection pump. Refer to PUMP, FUEL INJECTION, HIGH PRESSURE, REMOVAL .
- Turbocharger. Refer to TURBOCHARGER, REMOVAL .
