Camshaft, Engine: Removal

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the variable valve timing phasers. Refer to ASSEMBLY, VARIABLE VALVE TIMING, PHASER / OIL CONTROL VALVE, REMOVAL .

    NOTE:

    To avoid bending the camshafts, partially loosen each cam cap bolt, one turn at a time.

  3. Remove the camshaft cap bolts (1).

    NOTE:

    Use the indicated pry point (2) to remove the front camshaft bearing cap (1).

  4. Remove the camshaft bearing caps and the camshafts.

    NOTE:

    If removed, the front camshaft bearings can not be reused and must be discarded.

  5. If required, remove the front camshaft bearing (2) from the camshaft (3) using (special tool #8805, Installer, Bearing) (1).
