Cylinder Head: Installation
- If removed, install the fuel injection pump to the cylinder head. Refer to PUMP, FUEL INJECTION, HIGH PRESSURE, INSTALLATION .
- Clean and prepare all engine gasket surfaces. Refer to
ENGINE GASKET SURFACE PREPARATION .
- Install the oil supply filter (1) in the cylinder head.
- Install a new cylinder head gasket (1) onto the locating pins (2).
- Place the complete cylinder head in position onto the locating pins (2).CAUTION:
The cylinder head bolts are tightened using a torque plus angle procedure. The bolts must be examined BEFORE reuse. If the threads are necked down the bolts must be replaced.
- Check the cylinder head bolts for necking by holding a scale or straight edge against the threads. If all the threads do not contact the scale (2) the bolt must be replaced.
- Install ten inner head bolts (1 - 10) hand tight.
- Install the one outer head bolt (11) hand tight.
- Tighten the ten inner cylinder head bolts (1 - 10) in sequence, following this 4 step torque plus angle method. Tighten according to the following torque values:
- Step 1: All to 20 N.m (15 ft. lbs.)
- Step 2: All to 55 N.m (40 ft. lbs.)
- Step 3: All again to 55 N.m (41 ft. lbs.)
- Step 4: All an additional 180° turn. Do not use a torque wrench for this step.
- Tighten the one outer cylinder head bolt (11) to 28 N.m (21 ft. lbs.).
- Install the cam chain guide (4) and tighten the bolts (3) to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the cam chain tensioner arm (1) with the bushing and bolt (2) tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the hydraulic lifters and rocker arms. Refer to LIFTER(S), HYDRAULIC, INSTALLATION .
- Install the camshafts with the variable valve timing phasers still attached. Refer to CAMSHAFT, ENGINE, INSTALLATION .
- Install the cam chain. Refer to CHAIN AND SPROCKETS, TIMING, INSTALLATION .
- Install the timing cover. Refer to COVER(S), ENGINE TIMING, INSTALLATION .
- If removed, install the following components to the cylinder head:
- Intake and exhaust Camshaft Position (CMP) sensors. Refer to SENSOR, CAMSHAFT POSITION, INSTALLATION .
- Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensor. Refer to SENSOR, EGR TEMPERATURE, INSTALLATION .
- Turbocharger. Refer to TURBOCHARGER, INSTALLATION .
- Install the wire harness ground lug to the cylinder head and tighten the bolt (4) to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Connect the exhaust CMP sensor wire harness connector (5).
- Connect the intake CMP sensor wire harness connector (1).
- Install the wire harness tray and securely tighten the three screws (2).
- Engage the two wire harness retainers (3) to the turbocharger coolant supply pipe.
- Engage the two wire harness retainers (6) to the cylinder head.
- Connect the front fuel supply pipe quick-coupling (2) to the fuel injection pump (1).
- Connect the fuel pressure regulator wire harness connector (3).
- Connect the wire harness connector (1) to the EGR temperature sensor (2).
- Install the Intake manifold. Refer to MANIFOLD, INTAKE, INSTALLATION .
- Install the B+ wire harness at the starter and generator.
- Install the cylinder head cover and fuel injectors. Refer to COVER(S), CYLINDER HEAD, INSTALLATION .
- Install the coolant hose (1) to the cylinder head and tighten the bolt (2) to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the turbocharger oil supply and return pipes. Refer to LINES, TUBES AND HOSES, TURBOCHARGER, OIL AND COOLANT, INSTALLATION .
- Install the engine coolant manifold. Refer to MANIFOLD, COOLANT, INSTALLATION .
- Install the catalytic converter. Refer to CONVERTER, CATALYTIC, INSTALLATION .
- Install the oil dipstick tube. Refer to DIPSTICK TUBE, ENGINE OIL, INSTALLATION
.
- Install the coolant hose (1) to the turbocharger coolant return pipe and tighten the band clamp.
- Install the coolant hose (2) to the turbocharger coolant return pipe and tighten the band clamp.
- Fill the coolant system. Refer to COOLING SYSTEM, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- If removed, install the oil filter and fill the engine crankcase with the proper oil to the correct level. Refer to ENGINE OIL, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Connect the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), connect the IBS connector to the negative battery cable.
- Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
