Cylinder Head: Installation

  1. If removed, install the fuel injection pump to the cylinder head. Refer to PUMP, FUEL INJECTION, HIGH PRESSURE, INSTALLATION .
  2. Clean and prepare all engine gasket surfaces. Refer to ENGINE GASKET SURFACE PREPARATION .

  3. Install the oil supply filter (1) in the cylinder head.

  4. Install a new cylinder head gasket (1) onto the locating pins (2).
  5. Place the complete cylinder head in position onto the locating pins (2).

    CAUTION:

    The cylinder head bolts are tightened using a torque plus angle procedure. The bolts must be examined BEFORE reuse. If the threads are necked down the bolts must be replaced.

  6. Check the cylinder head bolts for necking by holding a scale or straight edge against the threads. If all the threads do not contact the scale (2) the bolt must be replaced.

  7. Install ten inner head bolts (1 - 10) hand tight.
  8. Install the one outer head bolt (11) hand tight.
  9. Tighten the ten inner cylinder head bolts (1 - 10) in sequence, following this 4 step torque plus angle method. Tighten according to the following torque values:
    • Step 1: All to 20 N.m (15 ft. lbs.)
    • Step 2: All to 55 N.m (40 ft. lbs.)
    • Step 3: All again to 55 N.m (41 ft. lbs.)
    • Step 4: All an additional 180° turn. Do not use a torque wrench for this step. 
  10. Tighten the one outer cylinder head bolt (11) to 28 N.m (21 ft. lbs.).

  11. Install the cam chain guide (4) and tighten the bolts (3) to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  12. Install the cam chain tensioner arm (1) with the bushing and bolt (2) tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  13. Install the hydraulic lifters and rocker arms. Refer to LIFTER(S), HYDRAULIC, INSTALLATION .
  14. Install the camshafts with the variable valve timing phasers still attached. Refer to CAMSHAFT, ENGINE, INSTALLATION .
  15. Install the cam chain. Refer to CHAIN AND SPROCKETS, TIMING, INSTALLATION .
  16. Install the timing cover. Refer to COVER(S), ENGINE TIMING, INSTALLATION .
  17. If removed, install the following components to the cylinder head:

  18. Install the wire harness ground lug to the cylinder head and tighten the bolt (4) to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  19. Connect the exhaust CMP sensor wire harness connector (5).
  20. Connect the intake CMP sensor wire harness connector (1).
  21. Install the wire harness tray and securely tighten the three screws (2).
  22. Engage the two wire harness retainers (3) to the turbocharger coolant supply pipe.
  23. Engage the two wire harness retainers (6) to the cylinder head.

  24. Connect the front fuel supply pipe quick-coupling (2) to the fuel injection pump (1).
  25. Connect the fuel pressure regulator wire harness connector (3).

  26. Connect the wire harness connector (1) to the EGR temperature sensor (2).
  27. Install the Intake manifold. Refer to MANIFOLD, INTAKE, INSTALLATION .
  28. Install the B+ wire harness at the starter and generator.
  29. Install the cylinder head cover and fuel injectors. Refer to COVER(S), CYLINDER HEAD, INSTALLATION .

  30. Install the coolant hose (1) to the cylinder head and tighten the bolt (2) to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  31. Install the turbocharger oil supply and return pipes. Refer to LINES, TUBES AND HOSES, TURBOCHARGER, OIL AND COOLANT, INSTALLATION .
  32. Install the engine coolant manifold. Refer to MANIFOLD, COOLANT, INSTALLATION .
  33. Install the catalytic converter. Refer to CONVERTER, CATALYTIC, INSTALLATION .
  34. Install the oil dipstick tube. Refer to DIPSTICK TUBE, ENGINE OIL, INSTALLATION .

  35. Install the coolant hose (1) to the turbocharger coolant return pipe and tighten the band clamp.
  36. Install the coolant hose (2) to the turbocharger coolant return pipe and tighten the band clamp.
  37. Fill the coolant system. Refer to COOLING SYSTEM, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  38. If removed, install the oil filter and fill the engine crankcase with the proper oil to the correct level. Refer to ENGINE OIL, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  39. Connect the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), connect the IBS connector to the negative battery cable.
  40. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
