Removal And Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2019 RAM 3500 HD and 2019 RAM 2500 HD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

REMOVAL 

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable(s). Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  3. Remove any necessary skid plates. Refer to PLATE, SKID, FRONT SUSPENSION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION , PLATE, SKID, FUEL TANK, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION and PLATE, SKID, TRANSFER CASE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
    NOTE:

    Mark propeller shaft and axle companion flanges for assembly alignment.

  4. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, REAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  5. Remove the front propeller shaft, if equipped. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, FRONT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  6. Remove the exhaust support bracket from the front and rear of the transmission (if equipped).
  7. Disconnect and remove the exhaust pipe. For 6.4L Refer to PIPE, EXHAUST, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or for 6.7L Refer to PIPE, EXHAUST, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  8. Disconnect the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) Catalyst, Refer to CATALYST, SELECTIVE CATALYTIC REDUCTION (SCR), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  9. Loosen the inspection cover bolts and remove the inspection cover.
  10. Remove the transmission dust shield (1).

  11. Rotate the fly wheel and remove the torque converter bolts one at a time.

  12. Disconnect gearshift cable (1) from transmission manual valve lever.

  13. Disengage the output speed sensor (OSS) connector (3) from the output speed sensor.
  14. Disengage the input speed sensor (ISS) connector (1) from the input speed sensor.
  15. Disengage the transmission solenoid/Transmission Range Solenoid (TRS) assembly connector (2) from the transmission solenoid/TRS assembly.

  16. Disengage the line pressure sensor connector from the line pressure sensor (1).

    1 - BOLT
  17. Disconnect electrical connector from the differential pressure sensor.
  18. Remove bolt (1) securing differential pressure sensor to the transmission case and position differential pressure sensor aside.

    Remove the bolt (1) securing the fill tube at the transmission (if equipped).

  19. Disconnect the cooler lines from the transmission using cooler line disconnect tool (special tool #9546, Disconnect Tool).
  20. Disconnect the transmission vent hose from the transmission.
  21. Support rear of engine with safety stand or jack.
  22. Raise transmission slightly with service jack to relieve load on crossmember and supports.
  23. Remove the transmission crossmember, Refer to CROSSMEMBER, TRANSMISSION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  24. If equipped, remove the transfer case. For BW44-46 Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION , for BW44-47 Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  25. Remove all remaining converter housing bolts (1).
  26. Carefully work transmission and torque converter assembly rearward off engine block dowels while removing the fill tube from the fill tube bore.
  27. Hold torque converter in place during transmission removal.
  28. Lower transmission (2) and remove assembly from under the vehicle.
  29. To remove torque converter, carefully slide torque converter out of the transmission.

INSTALLATION

NOTE:

This transmission is equipped with a solenoid for the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) that is a Variable Force Solenoid (VFS) with close tolerance Pressure/Inductance (PI) curve. It is necessary to update the TCC solenoid PI data in the PCM when replacing the TCC solenoid, Valve Body or Transmission assembly. This is done with the scan tool using the "Program Torque Converter Solenoid PI Curve" routine. The PI data is located on a 2-D BAR code etched on the body of the TCC solenoid. The data must be entered into the scan tool in order to upload the information to the PCM.

  1. If transmission is being replaced, record the data of the new transmissions 2-D barcode label (1) using a suitable smartphone application. Early build transmissions will have the 2-D barcode label on the right side of the transmission case. Save the data for the torque converter clutch solenoid PI curve programing. If the 2-D barcode label is not present, the transmission pan must be removed to record the same data off the solenoid. After data has been acquired, remove sticker from transmission.

  2. Check torque converter hub and hub drive flats for sharp edges burrs, scratches, or nicks. Polish the hub and flats with 800/1000 grit paper and crocus cloth if necessary. Verify that the converter hub O-ring is properly installed and is free of any debris. The hub must be smooth to avoid damaging pump seal at installation.
  3. If a replacement transmission is being installed, transfer any components necessary, such as the manual shift lever and shift cable bracket, from the original transmission onto the replacement transmission.
  4. Lubricate oil pump seal lip with transmission fluid.
  5. Align converter and oil pump.
  6. Carefully insert converter in oil pump. Then rotate converter back and forth until fully seated in pump gears.
  7. Check converter seating with steel scale and straightedge. Surface of converter lugs should be in front of the bell housing face about 25 mm, (1 in.).
  8. Temporarily secure converter with C-clamp.
  9. Position transmission on jack and secure it with chains.
  10. Check condition of converter flexplate. Replace the plate if cracked, distorted or damaged. Also be sure transmission dowel pins are seated in engine block and protrude far enough to hold transmission in alignment.

  11. Align the close tolerance torque converter bolt hole (1) in the flexplate so that the first torque converter bolt is installed here. The close tolerance bolt hole may be identified by 2 white painted lines (2) flanking the bolt hole.
  12. Apply a light coating of Mopar® High Temp Grease to the torque converter hub pocket in the rear pocket of the engine's crankshaft.

  13. Raise transmission (2) and align the torque converter with the drive plate and transmission converter housing with the engine block.
  14. Move transmission forward. Then raise, lower, or tilt transmission to align the converter housing with engine block dowels while positioning filler tube into the filler tube bore.
  15. Carefully work transmission forward and over engine block dowels until converter hub is seated in crankshaft. Verify that no wires, or the transmission vent hose, have become trapped between the engine block and the transmission.
    CAUTION:

    Ensure that the transmission bell housing and the engine block are flush before installing the bolts. Never utilize the mounting bolts to draw the transmission to the engine.

  16. Install two transmission housing to engine bolts securely.
  17. Install remaining torque converter housing to engine bolts and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  18. If equipped, install the transfer case. For BW44-46 Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION , for BW44-47 Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  19. Install the crossmember. Refer to CROSSMEMBER, TRANSMISSION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  20. Tighten the crossmember bolts to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  21. Remove jackstand from under the engine.

  22. Install the transmission inspection cover. Tighten the bolts to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  23. Install the power bending bracket.
  24. Install the transmission dust shield.

  26. Connect wires to solenoid and pressure switch assembly (2) connector.
  27. Connect wires to ISS (1).
  28. Connect wires to OSS (3).

  29. Connect wires to line pressure sensor (1). Be sure transmission harnesses are properly routed.

  30. Install the differential pressure sensor bolt (if equipped) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

    NOTE:

    CAUTION:

    It is essential that the correct length bolts are used to attach the converter to the flexplate. Bolts that are too long will damage the clutch surface inside the torque converter.

  31. Hand start a NEW  torque converter to flexplate bolt in the torque converter (1) and tighten to 20 N.m (15 ft. lbs.), then back it off 1/2 turn.
  32. Rotate the crankshaft 180 degrees in a clockwise direction and hand start a NEW  torque converter to flexplate bolt (2) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  33. Rotate crankshaft 60 degrees in a clockwise direction and hand start a NEW  torque converter to flexplate bolt (3) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  34. Rotate crankshaft 60 degrees in a clockwise direction and hand start a NEW  torque converter to flexplate bolt (4) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  35. Rotate crankshaft 60 degrees and tighten the first bolt installed (1) to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  36. Rotate crankshaft 60 degrees in a clockwise direction and hand start a NEW  torque converter to flexplate bolt (5) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  37. Rotate crankshaft 60 degrees in a clockwise direction and hand start a NEW  torque converter to flexplate bolt (6) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

  38. Connect cooler lines to transmission. Refer to TUBES AND HOSES, TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER/STANDARD PROCEDURE .

  39. Install transmission fill tube bolt (1). Tighten bolt to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  40. Install the exhaust pipe. For 6.4L Refer to PIPE, EXHAUST, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION , or for 6.7L Refer to PIPE, EXHAUST, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
    NOTE:

    If the front exhaust pipe is removed/replaced, always replace the turbocharger outlet seal and v-band clamp.

  41. Connect the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) Catalyst. Refer to CATALYST, SELECTIVE CATALYTIC REDUCTION (SCR), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  42. Align and connect propeller shaft(s). Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, FRONT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION and SHAFT, DRIVE, REAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  43. Adjust gearshift cable if necessary. Refer to CABLE, SHIFT, ADJUSTMENTS .
  44. Install any skid plates removed previously. Refer to PLATE, SKID, FRONT SUSPENSION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION , PLATE, SKID, FUEL TANK, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION and PLATE, SKID, TRANSFER CASE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  45. Lower the vehicle.
  46. Fill the transmission with Automatic Transmission Fluid. Refer to TRANSMISSION FILL .
  47. If transmission was replaced, perform transmission torque converter clutch solenoid PI curve programing procedure. Input saved data from the solenoid QR code.
    NOTE:

    Data input must be exact. Any deviation from the exact character string may result in poor transmission performance.

  48. Perform transmission quick learn procedure.


REMOVAL 

NOTE:

The valve body can be removed for service without having to remove the transmission assembly. The valve body can be disassembled for cleaning and inspection of the individual components.

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable(s). Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  3. Disconnect the transmission wire harness connector.
  4. Position drain pan under transmission oil pan.

  5. Loosen the 15 fasteners (1) and remove transmission oil pan.

  6. Remove the transmission pan gasket (1) and DISCARD  .

  7. Remove the fastener (1) and remove the primary oil filter (2) from valve body.

  8. Remove the six fasteners (1) attaching valve body to transmission case.
  9. Lower the valve body and work the electrical connector out of transmission case.
  10. Separate the valve body from the transmission.

INSTALLATION 

  1. If valve body is replaced, use a QR code scanner or similar smartphone application, scan the rectangular 2D matrix on the torque converter clutch solenoid. Record the output.

  2. If equipped, remove the old PI data sticker (1) from top of the transmission case. Removal is to prevent accidental use of the wrong data.
  3. Place Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) selector plate in the PARK position.
  4. Place the transmission in the PARK position.
  5. Lubricate seal on the solenoid and pressure switch assembly connector with petroleum jelly.

  6. Position valve body in transmission and align the manual lever on the valve body to the pin on the transmission manual shift lever. Route torque converter clutch solenoid wiring (1) through notch in valve body.

  7. Tighten valve body bolts alternately and evenly to proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  8. Operate the external manual shift lever and ensure that the TRS selector plate moves correctly into all gear range positions.
    CAUTION:

    The primary oil filter seal MUST be fully installed flush against the oil pump body. DO NOT install the seal onto the filter neck and attempt to install the filter and seal as an assembly. Damage to the transmission will result.

  9. Install a NEW  primary oil filter seal in the oil pump inlet bore. Seat the seal in the bore with the butt end of a hammer, or other suitable tool.

  10. Place NEW  filter (2) in position on valve body and into the oil pump. Tighten fastener (1) to proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

  11. Install NEW  oil pan gasket (1).

  12. Install oil pan and Tighten the 15 fasteners (1) to proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  13. Connect the transmission wire harness connector.
  14. Fill transmission to specification. Refer to CAPACITIES AND RECOMMENDED FLUIDS, SPECIFICATIONS .
  15. Check and adjust gearshift cable, if necessary.
  16. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
  17. Connect the negative battery cable(s). Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  18. Adjust gearshift cable if necessary. Refer to CABLE, SHIFT, ADJUSTMENTS .
  19. If valve body was replaced, transmission quick learn and PI curve need to be reflashed.
