Removal 2.4L
Hoisting and jack lift points provided in this article are for a complete vehicle. When the transaxle is removed, the center of gravity will shift to the rear of the vehicle, possibly creating an unstable condition. Place safety stands under the rear frame rails behind the rear axle to stabilize the vehicle. Personal injury may result if safety stands are not used.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Remove the battery. Refer to BATTERY, REMOVAL .
- Remove the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL (PCM), REMOVAL, 2.4L/3.2L .
- Remove the Power Distribution Center (PDC). Refer to CENTER, POWER DISTRIBUTION (PDC), REMOVAL .
- Remove the left and right half shafts. Refer to REMOVAL .
- Remove the left front wheel house splash shield. Refer to SHIELD, SPLASH, REAR WHEELHOUSE, REMOVAL .
- Remove the front fascia lower outboard rivets to the right front wheel house splash shield to gain access to the right lower load beam bolts.
- Remove the belly pan. Refer to BELLY PAN, REMOVAL .
- Remove the battery tray. Refer to TRAY, BATTERY, REMOVAL
.
- Release the lock on the Transmission Control Module (TCM) wire harness connector (1).
- Disconnect the TCM wire harness connector (1) from the TCM.
- Remove the nut (1) holding the wiring harness bracket and the nut (2) holding the ground cable to the top of the transmission.
- Separate the ground cable and the wiring harness bracket from the top of the transmission and position aside.
- Using a suitable prying tool (1), separate the shift cable end (2) from the manual lever on the transmission.
- Release the locks holding the shift cable housing (2) to the shift cable mounting bracket (1) on the transmission and separate the shift cable from the mounting bracket.
- Rotate the lock lever (1) counterclockwise on the transmission solenoid wire harness connector.
- Separate the transmission solenoid wire harness connector (1) from the transmission.
- If equipped, remove the Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Refer to REMOVAL .
- Lower the vehicle.
- If equipped with a PTU, reinstall the right side engine mount bolts through the mount into the frame rail.
- Position a floor jack under the transmission.
- Raise the jack enough to relieve tension on the upper transmission mount.
- Remove the bolts (1) holding the upper transmission mount to the adaptor block (4).
- Place a wooden block (1) between the transmission end cover and the frame rail load beam.
- Lower the floor jack until the wood block supports the transmission.
- Remove the bolts (3) and hidden bolts (2) holding the transmission mount adaptor block (4) to the transmission.
- Remove the transmission mount adaptor block (4) from the vehicle.
- Remove the upper transmission bellhousing bolt (1) holding the wire harness bracket and transmission bellhousing to the engine block.NOTE:
The upper starter bolt will not be completely removed due to lack of clearance between the transmission bellhousing and the transmission housing.
- Loosen the upper starter bolt (1) as far as possible to disengage the threads from the starter.
- Detach the four (2 shown in illustration) wiring harness push pins (1) from the top of the transmission.
- Remove upper bolts (1) holding the transmission bellhousing to the engine block located behind the main engine wire harness.
- Raise the vehicle.
- Place safety stands under the rear frame rails behind the rear axle to stabilize the vehicles center of gravity.
- Remove the bolt (1) holding the ground cable to the transmission and separate the ground cable from the transmission.
- Place a suitable drain pan under the transmission to collect fluid that may leak from the differential seals and cooler lines.
- Disengage the quick couplings and remove the cooler lines (1) from the transmission. If accessible, install suitable cap-plugs in the male and female ends of the cooler lines to prevent leakage.NOTE:
After the bolts holding the starter motor to the bellhousing are removed the starter motor will remain the place.
- Remove the bolt (3) holding the starter (4) to the transmission bellhousing (5).
- If Front Wheel Drive (FWD) remove the exhaust crossunder pipe. Refer to PIPE, EXHAUST CROSSUNDER, REMOVAL
.
.
- Remove the bolt (1) and the access plate (2) from the transmission.NOTE:
The crankshaft can be rotated using a wrench to turn the balancer pulley end bolt.
- Through the access plate opening, remove the flexplate to torque converter bolts (1). Rotate the crankshaft to bring each set of bolts into view through the access door.
- Using a wooden block (3) to protect the engine oil pan, position a high stand (2) under the engine oil pan to support the engine.
- Position a suitable transmission jack (1) under the transmission.
- Secure the transmission to the lift plate of the transmission jack to avoid dropping the transmission during removal.
- Lift the transmission jack and high stand until the wooden block (1) can be removed from between the transmission end cover and the frame rail load beam.
- Remove the rear engine mount insulator. For 2.4L, refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, REAR, REMOVAL
. For 3.2L, refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, REAR, REMOVAL
.
- Remove the bolts (2) holding the rear end of the load beam (1) to the suspension cradle.
- Remove the bolts (3) holding the front of the load beam (1) to the radiator support panel.
- Separate load beam (1) from the vehicle.
- Remove the bolt (1) holding the bellhousing to the engine block next to the catalytic converter.
- Remove the bolt (1) holding the engine block to the bellhousing next to the differential housing.
- Remove the bolts (1) holding the engine block to the bellhousing.CAUTION:
The transmission and torque converter must be removed as an assembly to avoid component damage. The converter driveplate, oil pump, or oil seal can be damaged if the converter is left attached to the driveplate during removal. Be sure to remove the transmission and converter as an assembly.
- Using a suitable prying tool, pry the bell housing away from the engine block.
- While guiding the transmission past obstacles, lower the transmission downward and away from the vehicle.
