Pinpoint Test B : Transmission Fluid Heater Coolant Control Valve

  1. Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    For the 2.7L EcoBoost engine, Refer to Electronic Engine Controls - 2.7L

    For the 3.3L Duratec - V6 engine, Refer to Electronic Engine Controls - 3.3L TIVCT

    For the 3.5L EcoBoost Base engine Refer to Electronic Engine Controls - 3.5L GTDI Base

    For the 3.5L EcoBoost High Output engine Refer to Electronic Engine Controls - 3.5L GTDI High Output

    For the 5.0L 32V TiVCT engine Refer to Electronic Engine Controls - 5.0L

    For the 3.0L Diesel engine, Refer to Electronic Engine Controls - 3.0L Diesel

    The transmission fluid heater coolant control valve is an electrically controlled solenoid that allows or bypasses the flow of engine coolant through the transmission fluid cooler. This electrically controlled valve is normally open when not energized. The valve receives fused battery voltage when the ignition is in the run or start position and is grounded by the PCM via a low side driver. The PCM monitors the solenoid and circuits for electrical faults and sets an appropriate DTC.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    PCM P2681:00 Engine Coolant Bypass Valve "A" Control Circuit/Open: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates an open circuit in the transmission fluid heater coolant control valve circuit.
    PCM P2683:00 Engine Coolant Bypass Valve "A" Control Circuit High: No Sub Type Information This DTC indicates a short to power in the transmission fluid heater coolant control valve circuit.

    Possible Sources 

    • Connectors damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires or ground and missing or damaged seals
    • BJB fuse F36 (10A)
    • Transmission fluid heater coolant control valve
    • PCM

  2. B1 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION FLUID HEATER COOLANT CONTROL VALVE POWER CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE

    • Disconnect Transmission fluid heater coolant control valve C1702.

    • Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed out terminals.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes  For DTC P2681, GO to  B2 For DTC P2683, GO to  B4
    No  CHECK BJB fuse F36 (10A). If the fuse is OK, REFER to OEM Electrical Wiring Diagram Introduction to identify and repair an open circuit. If the fuse is not OK, REFER to OEM Electrical Wiring Diagram Introduction to identify and repair a short to ground.
  3. B2 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION FLUID HEATER COOLANT CONTROL VALVE CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect PCM C1232T (for vehicles equipped with the 2.7L EcoBoost engine).

    • Disconnect PCM C1551T (for vehicles equipped with the 3.3L Duratec - V6 engine).

    • Disconnect PCM C175T (for vehicles equipped with the 3.5L EcoBoost Base engine).

    • Disconnect PCM C1915B (for vehicles equipped with the 3.5L EcoBoost High Output engine).

    • Disconnect PCM C1381T (for vehicles equipped with the 5.0L 32V TiVCT engine).

    • Disconnect PCM C1233E (for vehicles equipped with the 3.0L Diesel engine).

    • Measure:

      2.7L EcoBoost Engine

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  B3
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  4. B3 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION FLUID HEATER COOLANT CONTROL VALVE CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  B4
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  5. B4 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION FLUID HEATER COOLANT CONTROL VALVE

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      Transmission fluid heater coolant control valve, component side, pin 1

    Is the resistance between 15 and 30 ohms? 

    Yes  Refer to PCM Guided Routine Testing . After programming the new PCM, CARRY OUT the transmission strategy download. REFER to: Transmission Strategy Download (6R80) . REFER to: Transmission Strategy Download (10R80) .
    No  INSTALL a new transmission fluid heater coolant control valve. For 2.7L EcoBoost engines, REFER to: Transmission Fluid Heater Coolant Control Valve . For 3.3L Duratec - V6 engines, REFER to: Transmission Fluid Heater Coolant Control Valve . For 3.5L EcoBoost engines, REFER to: Transmission Fluid Heater Coolant Control Valve . For 5.0L 32V TiVCT engines, REFER to: Transmission Fluid Heater Coolant Control Valve . For 3.0L Diesel engines, REFER to: Transmission Fluid Heater Coolant Control Valve .
