Pinpoint Test E: C05E0:1C, C05E0:86

  1. Refer to FOUR WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEMS for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    The transfer case clutch actuator contains 2 hall effect position sensors A and B. The sensors share power and ground circuits. Power is provided by the AWD module and is 5v.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    AWD C05E0:1C 4WD/AWD Clutch "A" Position Sensor Circuit: Circuit Voltage Out Of Range This DTC sets when the AWD module Clutch "A" Position Sensor Circuit detects transfer case unit control circuit driver circuit voltage out of range.
    AWD C05E0:86 4WD/AWD Clutch "A" Position Sensor Circuit: Signal Invalid This DTC sets if the AWD module Clutch "A" Position Sensor Circuit detects signal invalid.
    AWD C0689:11 4WD/AWD Clutch "A" Actuator Position Sensor "A": Circuit Short To Ground This DTC sets if the AWD module Clutch "A" Position Sensor Circuit detects circuit short to ground.
    AWD C0689:13 4WD/AWD Clutch "A" Actuator Position Sensor "A": Circuit Open This DTC sets if the AWD module Clutch "A" Position Sensor Circuit detects Circuit Open.
    AWD C0689:17 4WD/AWD Clutch "A" Actuator Position Sensor "A": Circuit Voltage Above Threshold This DTC sets if the AWD module Clutch "A" Position Sensor Circuit detects Circuit Voltage Above Threshold.
    AWD C0689:29 4WD/AWD Clutch "A" Actuator Position Sensor "A": Signal Invalid This DTC sets if the AWD module Clutch "A" Position Sensor Circuit detects Circuit Voltage Above Threshold.
    AWD C0689:29 4WD/AWD Clutch "A" Actuator Position Sensor "A": Signal Invalid This DTC sets if the AWD module Clutch "A" Position Sensor Circuit detects Circuit Voltage Above Threshold.
    AWD C068A:11 4WD/AWD Clutch "A" Actuator Position Sensor "B": Circuit Short To Ground This DTC sets if the AWD Clutch "A" Actuator Position Sensor "B" detects circuit short to ground.
    AWD C068A:13 4WD/AWD Clutch "A" Actuator Position Sensor "B": Circuit Open This DTC sets if the AWD Clutch "A" Actuator Position Sensor "B" detects Circuit Open.
    AWD C068A:17 4WD/AWD Clutch "A" Actuator Position Sensor "B": Circuit Voltage Above Threshold This DTC sets if the AWD Clutch "A" Actuator Position Sensor "B" detects Circuit Voltage Above Threshold.
    AWD C068A:29 4WD/AWD Clutch "A" Actuator Position Sensor "B": Signal Invalid This DTC sets if the AWD Clutch "A" Actuator Position Sensor "B" detects Circuit Voltage Above Threshold.
    AWD C068A:29 4WD/AWD Clutch "A" Actuator Position Sensor "B": Signal Invalid This DTC sets if the AWD Clutch "A" Actuator Position Sensor "B" detects Circuit Voltage Above Threshold.

    Possible Sources 

    • Wiring, terminals or connectors
    • Transfer case clutch actuator

  2. E1 CHECK FOR TRANSFER CASE ACTUATOR POSITION SENSOR "A" POSITION DTC

    • Review continuous DTC retrieved from the AWD module.

    Was C00A8 actuator position sensor "B" DTC also retrieved from the AWD module? 

    Yes  The sensors share the same power and signal return circuits. GO to  E6
    No  The concern is isolated to the actuator position sensor "A" sensor signal. GO to  E2
  3. E2 CHECK ACTUATOR POSITION SENSOR "A" POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL FOR OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect the transfer case clutch actuator connector C2370.

    • Inspect harness connector for damage. Verify terminals are not splayed, damaged, or pushed out of the connector.

    • Disconnect the AWD module connector C2371.

    • Inspect harness connector for damage. Verify terminals are not splayed, damaged, or pushed out of the connector.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  E3
    No  REPAIR the open circuit.
  4. E3 CHECK ACTUATOR POSITION SENSOR "A" POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL FOR SHORT TO GROUND

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect the transfer case position sensor connector C2370.

    • Inspect harness connector for damage.

    • Disconnect the AWD module connector C2371.

    • Inspect harness connector for damage.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  The sensor power, signal, and ground circuits  are ok. INSTALL a new transfer case clutch actuator. REFER to: Transfer Case Shift Motor .
    No  REPAIR the short to ground.
  5. E4 CHECK THE AWD MODULE GROUND

    • Disconnect AWD module connector C2371.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  If less than 3 ohms, replace the AWD module. REFER to: All-Wheel Drive (AWD) Module .
    No  If greater than 3 ohms, repair ground circuit. GO to  E5
  6. E5 CHECK THE TRANSFER CASE POSITION SENSOR VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect the transfer case position sensor connector C2370.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the voltage between 4.7-5.3v? 

    Yes  Voltage is present at the clutch actuator. GO to  E6
    No  GO to  E7
  7. E6 CHECK AWD MODULE SIGNAL RETURN

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect the Transfer case Clutch "A" Position Sensor C2370.

    • Connect the AWD module C2371.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the voltage between 4.7v-5.29v? 

    Yes  The SIGNAL RETURN circuit is intact. The AWD module is not grounding Signal Return at pin 18. Verify module power and ground integrity. If circuit integrity is acceptable, INSTALL a new AWD module. REFER to: All-Wheel Drive (AWD) Module .
    No  The sensor VREF and SIGNAL RETURN CIRCUITS are ok. INSTALL a new Transfer case assembly. REFER to: Transfer Case - Removal and Transfer Case - Installation .
  8. E7 CHECK THE TRANSFER CASE POSITION SENSOR POWER CIRCUIT FOR OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect the transfer case position sensor connector C2370.

    • Disconnect AWD module C2371.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  E8
    No  REPAIR the open circuit.
  9. E8 CHECK THE TRANSFER CASE POSITION SENSOR POWER CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect the transfer case position sensor connector C2370.

    • Disconnect AWD module C2371.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new AWD module. REFER to: All-Wheel Drive (AWD) Module .
    No  REPAIR the short to ground.
  10. E9 CHECK THE TRANSFER CASE POSITION SENSOR GROUND FOR OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect the transfer case position sensor connector C2370.

    • Disconnect AWD module C2371.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new transfer case clutch actuator. REFER to: Transfer Case Shift Motor .
    No  REPAIR the open circuit.
