Pinpoint Test Y : The Low Oil Pressure Warning Indicator Is Never Or Always On (Except 1.5L Engine)

  1. Instrument Cluster for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    See Low Oil Pressure RTT Warning Indicator. REFER to: Message Center - System Operation and Component Description .

    If the engine rpm data or oil pressure warning message is missing for less than 5 seconds, the IPC defaults the low oil pressure warning indicator to the last state (on or off), based upon the last message received.

    If the engine rpm data or oil pressure warning message is missing for 5 seconds or longer, the IPC defaults the low oil pressure warning indicator on.

    Possible Sources 

    • Wiring, terminals or connectors
    • Tachometer concern
    • Engine oil pressure switch
    • Base engine concern
    • GWM concern
    • PCM
    • IPC

  2. Y1 CHECK THE LOW OIL PRESSURE WARNING INDICATOR OPERATION USING A DIAGNOSTIC SCAN TOOL

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, view the IPC Parameter Identifications (PIDs).

    • Select the IPC low oil pressure warning indicator (OIL_P_LOW) PID.

    • Command the low oil pressure warning indicator on and off while observing the low oil pressure warning indicator.

    Does the low oil pressure warning indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off? 

    Yes  GO to  Y2
    No  INSTALL a new IPC. REFER to: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) .
  3. Y2 CHECK THE TACHOMETER OPERATION

    • Start the engine.

    • NOTE: For the optional dual 4.2" message center display IPC, make sure the IPC is set to display the tachometer. The IPC and message center navigation can be found in the Owner's Literature

      Verify the tachometer operates.

    Does the tachometer operate? 

    Yes  GO to  Y3
    No  GO to Pinpoint Test G 
  4. Y3 PERFORM THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the IPC self-test.

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    Yes  REFER to DTC Chart: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) 
    No  If the low oil pressure RTT warning indicator is never on, GO to  Y4 If the low oil pressure RTT warning indicator is always on, GO to  Y6
  5. Y4 CHECK FOR A STUCK CLOSED ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect Engine Oil Pressure Switch C1629 (1.0L Engine).

    • Disconnect Engine Oil Pressure Switch C1642 (1.5L Diesel Engine).

    • Disconnect Engine Oil Pressure Switch C1657 (2.0L Engine).

    • Ignition ON.

    • Observe the low oil pressure warning indicator.

    Does the low oil pressure warning indicator turn on? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new engine oil pressure switch. REFER to OIL PRESSURE SWITCH (1.0L) or refer to OIL PRESSURE SWITCH (2.0L)
    No  GO to  Y5
  6. Y5 CHECK THE OIL PRESSURE INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND AT THE PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE)

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect PCM C1381E (1.0L Engine).

    • Disconnect PCM C1381T (1.5L Diesel Engine).

    • Disconnect PCM C1915E (2.0L Engine).

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:

      1.0L Engine 

      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      1.5L Diesel Engine

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  Y11
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  7. Y6 CHECK THE GWM (GATEWAY MODULE A) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, check the GWM Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    Yes 
    No  GO to  Y7
  8. Y7 PERFORM THE PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the PCM self-test.

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    Yes  REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS (1.0L) or refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS (2.0L)
    No  GO to  Y8
  9. Y8 CHECK FOR A STUCK OPEN ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect Engine Oil Pressure Switch C1629 (1.0L Engine).

    • Disconnect Engine Oil Pressure Switch C1642 (1.5L Diesel Engine).

    • Disconnect Engine Oil Pressure Switch C1657 (2.0L Engine).

    • Connect a fused jumper wire:

      1.0L Engine

    • Ignition ON.

    • Observe the low oil pressure warning indicator.

    Does the low oil pressure indicator turn off? 

    Yes  REMOVE the fused jumper wire. GO to  Y9
    No  LEAVE the jumper wire connected. GO to  Y10
  10. Y9 CHECK THE OIL PRESSURE

    • Test the engine for low oil pressure.

    Was a low oil pressure concern detected? 

    Yes  REPAIR the low oil pressure concern. REFER to: Engine .
    No  INSTALL a new engine oil pressure switch. REFER to OIL PRESSURE SWITCH (1.0L) or refer to OIL PRESSURE SWITCH (2.0L)
  11. Y10 CHECK THE ENGINE OIL PRESSURE INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN AT THE PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE)

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect PCM C1381E (1.0L Engine).

    • Disconnect PCM C1381T (1.5L Diesel Engine).

    • Disconnect PCM C1915E (2.0L Engine).

    • Measure:

      1.0L Engine 

      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      1.5L Diesel Engine

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  REMOVE the fused jumper wire. GO to  Y11
    No  REMOVE the fused jumper wire. REPAIR the circuit.
  12. Y11 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect the PCM and all related in-line connectors.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the PCM and all related in-line connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK On-Line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) address this concern, Refer to PCM GUIDED ROUTINE TESTING
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
