Pinpoint Test G : The Tachometer Is Inoperative

If the IPC does not receive the engine rpm data from the PCM for more than 5 seconds, the IPC defaults the tachometer to 0 rpm.

- G1 PERFORM THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) SELF-TEST
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the IPC self-test.
- Check for recorded Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) from the IPC self-test.
Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded?
Yes REFER to DTC Chart: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) No GO to G2 - G2 PERFORM THE PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) KOEO (KEY ON, ENGINE OFF) SELF-TEST
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the PCM KOEO self-test.
- Check for recorded Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) from the PCM self-test.
Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded?
Yes REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS (1.0L) or refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS (2.0L) No GO to G3 - G3 CHECK THE GWM (GATEWAY MODULE A) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, check the GWM Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded?
Yes No GO to G4 - G4 PERFORM THE TACHOMETER ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, view the IPC Parameter Identifications (PIDs).
- Select the IPC tachometer (TACH_IND) PID.

NOTE: Make sure to set the scan tool to 0 rpm before beginning this step.
Command the tachometer on and off while monitoring the tachometer.
Does the tachometer start at 0 rpm move to 8, 000 rpm (gas engine) or 6, 000 (diesel engine) and return to 0 rpm?
Yes Refer to PCM GUIDED ROUTINE TESTING No INSTALL a new IPC. REFER to: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) .
