Removal Procedure

  1. Open the hood.
  2. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief .
  3. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  5. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  6. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging (R-134a)Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging (R-1234yf) .
  7. Remove the front wheels and tires. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  8. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .
  9. Remove the engine control module. Refer to Engine Control Module Replacement .
  10. Remove the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement .
  11. Remove the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement (without Engine Block Heater)Battery Tray Replacement (with Engine Block Heater) .
  12. Remove the steering gear dashboard inner seal by turning the seal (1).

    NOTE: Turn the steering wheel randomly to lock the steering wheel.
  13. Remove the lower intermediate steering shaft bolt (2) and detach the lower intermediate steering shaft (3).
  14. Remove the engine wiring harness fuse block cover.

  15. Remove the fuse block. Refer to Fuse Block Replacement .
  16. Remove the ground bolt (1) and put the wiring harness (2) aside.

  17. Remove the shift lever and selector lever cable (1) from the shift control housing (3).

  18. Press Remove the shift lever and selector lever cable (2) from the selector and shift lever cable bracket (4).
  19. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  20. Remove the exhaust muffler. Refer to Exhaust Muffler Replacement (L5Q)Exhaust Muffler Replacement (LV7) .
  21. Disconnect the heater inlet hose. Refer to Heater Inlet Hose Replacement .
  22. Disconnect the heater outlet hose. Refer to Heater Outlet Hose Replacement .
  23. Remove the brake booster vacuum pipe (1) from the vacuum pump.

  24. Disconnect the fuel feed pipe fitting (1) from the fuel rail.

  25. Disconnect the evaporative emission pipe fitting (1) from the evaporative emission canister purge solenoid valve.

  26. Remove the surge tank fixing bolts and set aside.

  27. Remove the front bumper fascia. Refer to Front Bumper Fascia Replacement .
  28. Remove the radiator air upper baffle and deflector 6 retainers (1) and the radiator air upper baffle and deflector (2). Refer to Radiator Air Upper Baffle and Deflector Replacement .

  29. Remove the radiator air lower baffle 5 retainers (1) and the radiator air lower baffle (2). Refer to Radiator Air Lower Baffle Replacement .

  30. Remove the air conditioning evaporator hose assembly bolt (1) from the air conditioning compressor and air conditioning evaporator hose assembly nut (2) from the condenser. Remove the air conditioning evaporator hose assembly (3, 4). Refer to Air Conditioning Evaporator Hose Assembly Replacement (L5Q)Air Conditioning Evaporator Hose Assembly Replacement (LV7) .

  31. Detach the front brake hose (2) from the strut mounted brake hose retaining bracket and remove the front brake caliper retaining bolts (1) from the front steering knuckle. Repeat for opposite side.

    NOTE: DO NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the brake caliper otherwise complete bleeding of the braking system will be necessary.
  32. Support the front brake caliper with heavy mechanics wire or equivalent. Repeat for opposite side.
    CAUTION: Support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic wire or equivalent, whenever it is separated from its mount and the hydraulic flexible brake hose is still connected. Failure to support the caliper in this manner will cause the flexible brake hose to bear the weight of the caliper, which may cause damage to the brake hose and in turn may cause a brake fluid leak.
  33. Disconnect the outer tie rod assembly from the steering knuckle. Repeat for opposite side. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement .
  34. Remove the wheel drive shaft nut and washer from the wheel drive shaft and discard. Repeat for opposite side. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement .
  35. Separate the control arm ball joint from the steering knuckle. Repeat for opposite side. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement .
  36. Remove the front upper stabilizer shaft link nut (1) and push the front upper stabilizer shaft link (2) aside. Repeat for opposite side.

  37. Disconnect any additional electrical connections as necessary.
  38. Remove the clutch actuator cylinder front pipe retaining clip (1).

  39. Disconnect the clutch actuator cylinder front pipe (2) from the clutch actuator cylinder pipe elbow.
  40. Position the engine assembly on a suitable powertrain table or an engine lifter below the cradle with suitable woodblocks or suitable rubber blocks.
  41. Lower the vehicle until the suitable powertrain table or the engine lifter with suitable woodblocks or suitable rubber blocks.
  42. Remove the cradle bracket bolts (1).

  43. Remove the cradle front bolts (1) and washers (2) and cradle rear bolts (3) and washers (4).

  44. Mark the location of the bolts before removing.

  45. Remove the engine mount retaining bolts (1) from the engine mount (2).
  46. Mark the location of the bolts before removing.

  47. Remove the left transmission mount bolts (1) from the transmission mount bracket (2).
  48. With the aid of an assistant, lower the engine lifter or raise the vehicle to remove the engine, transmission and cradle assembly from the vehicle.
    NOTE: Make sure that all the hoses, wires, pipes and front struts clear the vehicle during the removal process.
  49. Remove the engine master harness wiring assembly (1) from the engine assembly.

  50. Remove the battery positive cable assembly and body master harness wiring assembly (1) from the engine assembly.

  51. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct (1) from the engine assembly.

  52. Remove the radiator inlet hose. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement .
  53. Remove the radiator outlet hose. Refer to Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement .
  54. Remove the air conditioning compressor and condenser hose. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor and Condenser Hose Replacement .
  55. Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement .
  56. Remove the both front wheel drive shafts (1) from the transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement .

  57. Remove the transmission upper bolts (1) and nut (2) from the transmission.

  58. Remove the transmission rear mount bracket. Refer to Transmission Rear Mount Bracket Replacement .
  59. Support the transmission with a suitable jack.
  60. Remove the transmission lower bolt (1).

  61. Remove the transmission side cover (2).
  62. Separate the transmission from the engine.
  63. Lower the transmission with the transmission jack far enough to remove the transmission.
  64. Install the engine to an engine stand.
  65. Transfer parts as needed.
