11 36 125 Removing and installing/replacing intake VANOS central valve (Vehicles with automatic transmission): Notes
WARNING:
Working on 12 V electrical system.

- Make sure that there is no charger connected to the jump start terminal in the engine compartment.
- Detach battery ground lead from battery.
- For auxiliary batteries: Detach battery minus cables from all auxiliary batteries.

- When working on the fuel system, make sure that the workbay is sufficiently ventilated, e.g. using extraction unit.
- Tightly seal off open lines and connections; collect any leakage fuel directly at the point of exit.
- No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking.
CAUTION:
On releasing high pressure line, fuel may emerge at high speed.

- Wear suitable personal protective equipment.
- Before performing any installation work, allow cooling system to cool down to less than 40 °C.
- Note warnings on cylinder head cover.
NOTE:
Damage to battery terminal, the safety battery terminal or the intelligent battery sensor (IBS).
Damaged battery terminals can lead to malfunctions or vehicle electrical system faults.

- Detach battery terminal from battery pole by carefully shifting to and fro. Do not pry off using a tool.
NOTE:
After replacing one or more VANOS central valves or VANOS adjusters:
When removing, make note of the identification/part number of the VANOS central valve or VANOS adjuster and consider writing it down.
It must be replaced with a VANOS adjuster or VANOS central valve with the same part number. A mixed installation is not allowed.
Read out the vehicle I-level and proceed accordingly.
Be absolutely certain to pay attention to PuMA measure 64122020.

- Refer to DISCONNECTING ALL BATTERY GROUND LEADS
- Set engine compartment lid into service position
- Remove the cover in the left engine compartment
- Remove the right cover in the engine compartment
- Remove both wiper arms
- Remove cowl panel cover
- Refer to REMOVING TRAILING LINK AT SPRING STRUT DOME
- Remove the sound insulation on the bulkhead upper part at the center
- Refer to REMOVING ACOUSTIC COVER AT REAR

- Turn the engine on the vibration damper. Refer to the relevant instructions under the procedure for CHECKING CAMSHAFT TIMING (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) .
- Block the crankshaft in the TDC firing position of cylinder 1. Refer to the relevant instructions under procedure for CHECKING CAMSHAFT TIMING (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) .
- Refer to the relevant instructions for blocking the camshafts under procedure for CHECKING CAMSHAFT TIMING (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) .

- Install tension strut on spring strut dome. Jointing torque: 56 Nm, angle of rotation: 90° NOTE: Replace screws.
- Install the sound insulation on the bulkhead upper part at the center
- Attach cowl panel cover
- Install both wiper arms
- Checking the angle of attack of the wiper arms on the left and right
- Install the cover in the engine compartment on the left
- Install the cover in the engine compartment on the right
- Refer to INSTALLING STARTER MOTOR
- Refer to CONNECTING ALL BATTERY GROUND LEADS
- Connect the diagnostic system for possible integration level encoding and programming
- Refer to INSTALLING ACOUSTIC COVER
- Install the support for the underbody protection. Tightening torque: 3Nm.
- Install underbody protection at rear
- Install the front underbody protection
- Take hood out of the service position
- Check engine oil level
