51 12 156 Removing and installing (replacing) rear bumper panel

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2016 BMW 328i xDrive, 2016 BMW 328d xDrive, 2015 BMW 328i xDrive, 2015 BMW 328d xDrive, and 2014 BMW 328i xDrive. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
IMPORTANT: To guarantee system function on vehicles with LANE CHANGE WARNING SENSOR :
  • there must be no mechanical damage (e.g. dents) and no body repair work with filler or painting (several coats) must be carried out in a 10 cm radius about the left or right sensor on the bumper panel
  • no stickers must be attached in the area of the sensor

Follow the further instructions according to painting manual.

Release screws (1) on wheel arch cover (2) on left/right.

NOTE: Carry out work on the right side in the same way as for the left side illustrated here.

Fold back wheel arch cover (1).

Release screw (2).

Tightening torque: 51 12 4AZ .

NOTE: Carry out work on the right side in the same way as for the left side illustrated here.

Release screws (1).

Tightening torque: 51 12 6AZ .

Release cover (1) at latch mechanism (2).

Release screw (3) beneath.

Tightening torque: 51 12 5AZ .

NOTE: Carry out work on the right side in the same way as for the left side illustrated here.

NOTE: The following tasks must be carried out with a second person assisting:

Unclip the bumper panel (1) in the area (2) left/right outward.

Unclip bumper panel (1) in area (3) toward the rear.

If necessary, disconnect the plug connections of the ultrasonic sensors and remove the bumper panel (1).

Installation note: 

Latch mechanisms in this area (2 and 3) must be routed correctly into the corresponding holders.

Adjustment, see BODY GAP DIMENSIONS .

Installation note: 

Latch mechanisms and guides (1) must not be damaged or missing.

If necessary, replace faulty sheet metal nuts left/right.
