Engine, Installing

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.

Procedure 

Install in reverse order of removal and note the following:

NOTE:

Vehicles with dual clutch transmission: always replace the needle bearing in the crankshaft after the engine and transmission have been separated. Refer to CRANKSHAFT NEEDLE BEARING, REPLACING .

Replace the bolts that were tightened with an additional turn after removing them.

Replace the self-locking nuts and bolts, gaskets, seals and O-rings.

The hose connections as well as air duct pipes and hoses must be free of oil and grease before installing.

Secure all hose connections with hose clamps that match the ones used in series production. Refer to the Parts Information.

During installation, all cable ties must be installed at the same location.

-- Attach the transmission to the engine. Refer to TRANSMISSION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Lift the engine/transmission assembly using the :T10359A  .

-- Guide the engine/transmission assembly into the body.

-- Install the bolts -arrows- for the engine mount by hand all the way.

-- Install the bolts -arrows- for the transmission mount -1- by hand all the way.

NOTE:

Only tighten the bolts to the final specification when adjusting the subframe mount. Refer to OVERVIEW - SUBFRAME MOUNT .

-- Remove the :T10359A  from the engine.

-- Install the drive axles. Refer to OVERVIEW - DRIVE AXLE .

Vehicles with Manual Transmission:

-- Install the cables with the cable bracket. Refer to OVERVIEW - SHIFT MECHANISM .

-- Install the hose/line assembly on the bleeder. Refer to the appropriate service information .

Vehicles with Dual-Clutch Transmission:

-- Install the gearshift lever cable and adjust. Refer to OVERVIEW - SHIFT MECHANISM .

AWD Vehicles:

-- Attach the driveshaft to the bevel box. Refer to the appropriate service information .

-- Install the drive axle heat shield. Refer to DRIVE AXLE HEAT SHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

Continuation for All Vehicles:

-- Install the A/C compressor. Refer to OVERVIEW - A/C COMPRESSOR POWER UNIT .

-- Install the ribbed belt. Refer to RIBBED BELT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the Coolant Recirculation Pump -V50-. Refer to Coolant Recirculation Pump -V50-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the subframe. Refer to SUBFRAME WITHOUT STEERING GEAR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Adjust the subframe mount. Refer to SUBFRAME MOUNT, ADJUSTING .

-- Install the Engine Control Module -J623-. Refer to Engine Control Module -J623-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the coolant pipe. Refer to Fig 2.

-- Connect the fuel line. Refer to CONNECTOR COUPLINGS, DISCONNECTING .

-- Install the catalytic converter. Refer to CATALYTIC CONVERTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Vehicles with particulate filter: install the pressure lines for the Exhaust Pressure Sensor 1 -G450-. Refer to OVERVIEW - HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR .

-- Electrical connections and routing. Refer to COMPONENT LOCATION OVERVIEW - RELAY PANELS, FUSE PANELS AND E-BOXES and the Wiring Diagram.

-- Follow the steps for connecting the battery. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

-- Install the air duct pipes. Refer to OVERVIEW - CHARGE AIR SYSTEM .

-- Install the air duct hoses. Refer to OVERVIEW - CHARGE AIR HOSE CONNECTIONS .

-- Install the air filter housing and the air ducts. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the engine cover. Refer to ENGINE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Check the oil level. Refer to ENGINE OIL LEVEL, CHECKING AND CORRECTING IF NECESSARY

CAUTION:

There is a risk of destroying the control modules due to excessive voltage.

  • Do not use a charger to jump start.

-- Attach the coolant hoses with the connector coupling to the heater core for the heater. Refer to Fig 3.

NOTE:

Used coolant cannot be used again.

-- Fill with coolant. Refer to Coolant, Filling .

-- Adjust the chain length after replacing the engine. Select 01 - Chain Length Adaptation Diagnosis  in Guided Functions  on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.

-- The combustion misfire adaptation must be adapted after replacing the engine. Select 01 Reset Combustion Misfire Adaptation  in Guided Fault Finding  using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.

Tightening Specifications 

NOTE:

The tightening specifications only apply to lightly greased, oiled, phosphated or blackened nuts and bolts.

Additional lubricants, such as engine or transmission oil are permissible, although lubricants containing graphite are not.

Do not use any ungreased parts.

Tightening specification tolerance: ±15%.
