Rear Axle, Removing And Installing

Special tools and workshop equipment required

Torque Wrench 1332 40-200Nm: VAG1332
Engine and Gearbox Jack: VAS6931
Tensioning Strap: T10038
Locating Pins: T10096

Removing the Subframe and its Attachments

-- Loosen the wheel bolts.

-- Raise the vehicle.

-- Remove the wheels.

-- Remove the brake calipers on both sides of the vehicle and hang on the body.

-- Remove the coil springs. Refer to Installing .

-- Remove the rear muffler. Refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER .

Vehicles with Left Rear Level Control System Sensor -G76-

-- Disconnect the connector -1-.

-- Remove the bolt -arrow-.

-- Disconnect the parking brake cable -1- from the bracket -2-.

-- Push the lever on the brake caliper -2- in the direction of -arrow-.

-- Disengage the parking brake cable -1- from the lever on the brake caliper -2-.

-- Press the tabs -3- together.

-- Remove the parking brake cable -1- from the bracket -4- on the brake caliper.

-- Unclip the parking brake cable -1- from the retainer -arrow A- on the bracket -2-.

-- Pull the parking brake cable -1- in direction of -arrow- out of the guide -arrow B- on the bracket -2-.

-- Disconnect the speed sensor connectors.

-- Unclip the speed sensor wire out of the bracket -1- -arrows-.

-- Unclip the brake lines -1- from the bracket -arrow- on the left side of the body.

-- Remove the clip -2- from the subframe -3- and loosen the brake hose from it.

NOTE:

Do not disconnect the brake line.

-- Secure both sides of the vehicle on the hoist lifting arms using the : T10038 .

WARNING:

The vehicle could slide off the hoist if it is not secured.

-- Secure the subframe. Refer to SUBFRAME, SECURING .

-- Mark the mounting bracket installation location on the body.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.

-- Carefully lower the subframe with its attachments approximately 2 cm.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and the heat shield -1-.

-- Remove the brake line -1- from the clips -arrows-.

NOTE:

When doing this, the clips will be destroyed and must be replaced.

For better illustration, the subframe is shown from above and is removed.

-- Lower the subframe with attachments.

Subframe with Attachments, Installing

Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Note the following:

-- Perform an axle alignment. Refer to AXLE ALIGNMENT .

Tightening Specifications

Refer to OVERVIEW - SUBFRAME
Refer to OVERVIEW - SUSPENSION STRUT, SHOCK ABSORBER, SPRING
Refer to OVERVIEW - WHEEL BEARING
Exhaust system bracket to subframe. Refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER .

Component	Tightening Specification
Heat shield to subframe	2.5 Nm
