Instrument Panel Tie Bar Removal And Installation/Replacement

Mobile Repair Possible:  No

WARNING:
  • Explosive materials

    Failure to follow specified procedures may result in death or serious injury due to improper handling of airbag modules possible.

    • Only appropriately trained persons may carry out work on pyrotechnic components or the Airbag Control Unit.
    • Perform SRS disabling procedure prior to commencing work.
    • When replacing components of the SRS system, never install used or non-genuine components.
    • Pyrotechnic Components must be handled and scrapped appropriately.

Removal Procedure: 

  1. There is potential for inadvertent deployment of SRS systems during repairs if the system has not been properly disabled. Refer to SRS DISABLING AND ENABLING
    NOTE: Ensure the 2-minute wait time has been observed before proceeding to next step.
  2. Disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal. Refer to 12V BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION
  3. Remove driver knee airbag module. Refer to DRIVER KNEE AIRBAG MODULE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  4. Remove passenger knee airbag module. Refer to PASSENGER KNEE AIRBAG MODULE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  5. Remove instrument panel assembly. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT 
  6. Remove head-up display (HUD). Refer to HEAD-UP DISPLAY (HUD) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  7. Remove front floor console rear air duct. Refer to FRONT FLOOR CONSOLE REAR AIR DUCT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  8. Remove instrument panel center air outlet duct. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL CENTER AIR OUTLET DUCT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  9. Remove multimedia head unit. Refer to MULTIMEDIA HEAD UNIT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  10. Remove steering column (manual). Refer to STEERING COLUMN REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT (MANUAL) or
  11. Remove steering column (electric). Refer to STEERING COLUMN REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT (ELECTRIC)
  12. Remove windshield wiper motor and transmission. Refer to WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR AND TRANSMISSION REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT

  13. Remove both nuts (1) in the engine compartment.

    Torque: 5 Nm

  14. Unclip the cable duct (1) and detach it from the body.

    Removal note: For better illustration the removal is shown with the wiring harness and duct removed. 

  15. Remove 3 bolts (1) in the engine compartment.

    Torque: 21.4 Nm

  16. Remove both bolts (1) in the engine compartment.

    Torque: 21.4 Nm

  17. Unlock and disconnect 3 electrical connectors (1).

  18. Unlock and disconnect the electrical connector (1).
  19. Remove the bolts (1).

    Torque: 8 Nm

  20. Unlock and disconnect the electrical connector (1).

  21. Unlock and disconnect 3 electrical connectors (1).
  22. Unclip wiring harness (2) from HVAC unit.

  23. Unlock and disconnect 6 electrical connector (1) in the right footwell.

  24. Remove both plastic push pins (1) in the footwell on right side and fold back the floor panel carpet to access the ground cables.

  25. Remove both nuts (1) and remove cable.

    Torque: 8 Nm

  26. Remove 2 bolts (1).

    Torque: 21.4 Nm 

  27. Remove the bracket (2) on the right side.
  28. Unclip both retainers (3) from the instrument panel tie bar.

  29. Remove both plastic push pins (1) in the footwell on left side and fold back the floor panel carpet to access the ground cables.

  30. Remove 2 bolts (1).

    Torque: 21 Nm 

  31. Remove the bracket (2) on the left side.
  32. Unclip the retainer (3) from the instrument panel tie bar.

  33. Remove 3 bolts (1).

    Torque: 8 Nm

  34. Remove 3 bolts (1).

    Torque: 8 Nm 

  35. Remove 2 bolts (2).

    Torque: 21.4 Nm

  36. Remove the bolt (1).

    Torque: 8 Nm 

  37. Remove 2 bolts (2).

    Torque: 21.4 Nm

    Removal note: Helper is needed. 

  38. Remove the instrument panel tie bar (1) with the wiring harness (2) in direction of the arrow.

    Installation note: Insert the guide pin (1) of the tie bar on both sides. Helper is needed.

    Installation note: Ensure that the guide pin (1) of the HVAC unit are seated correctly. 

Replacement Procedure: 

  1. Rebuild the rear HVAC climate control module. Refer to HVAC CLIMATE CONTROL MODULE REAR REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT

  2. Remove 4 bolts (1).

    Torque: 5 Nm

    Torque: 5 Nm

  4. Remove 2 bolts (1).

    Torque: 8 Nm

  6. Unclip all retainers along the wiring harness (1) from the instrument panel tie bar (2).
  7. Remove the wiring harness (1) from instrument panel tie bar (2) and rebuild.

Installation Procedure: 

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal procedure, noting the following. All fasteners must be tightened to torque specification! 
  2. Remove windshield wiper motor and transmission. Refer to WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR AND TRANSMISSION REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  3. Install steering column (manual). Refer to STEERING COLUMN REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT (MANUAL) or
  4. Install steering column (electric). Refer to STEERING COLUMN REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT (ELECTRIC)
  5. Install multimedia head unit. Refer to MULTIMEDIA HEAD UNIT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  6. Install instrument panel center air outlet duct. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL CENTER AIR OUTLET DUCT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  7. Install front floor console rear air duct. Refer to FRONT FLOOR CONSOLE REAR AIR DUCT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  8. Install head-up display (HUD). Refer to HEAD-UP DISPLAY (HUD) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  9. Install instrument panel assembly. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT 
  10. Install driver knee airbag module. Refer to DRIVER KNEE AIRBAG MODULE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  11. Install passenger knee airbag module. Refer to PASSENGER KNEE AIRBAG MODULE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  12. Reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal. Refer to 12V BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION
