Remove/install retaining lock for crankshaft/ring gear - AR03.30-P-5000EWS

9.9.09 Remove starter - newly added Step 2.1  
INSTALLINGREMOVING Installing, removing     
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
1 Remove bottom engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105EW
2.1 Remove starter Vehicles with 4MATIC AR15.30-P-7100EW
2.2 Unscrew nuts (1) and remove screw/bolts from transmission housing Vehicles without 4MATIC  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Manual transmission *BA26.10-P-1001-01C 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Automatic transmission *BA27.40-P-1008-01A 
3 Remove cover (2) from crankcase Vehicles without 4MATIC  
INSPECT Checking     
4 Check toothing of starter ring gear on the two-mass flywheel or on the drive plate IMPORTANT Check toothing for wear and damage, by continuing to rotate engine at center bolt on crankshaft in direction of rotation of engine. If necessary:
 
    Replace flywheel or drive plate. AR03.30-P-8001EW

DANGER Risk of injury  caused by moving parts that can pinch, crush  or, in extreme cases, even sever extremities No parts of the body or limbs should be within the operating range of the mechanism when moving components. AS00.00-Z-0009-01A
5 Insert retaining lock (01) into access opening IMPORTANT If required, rotate engine further at center bolt for crankshaft in engine's direction of rotation until the retaining lock (01) snaps into place.

6 Remove in the reverse order
