Remove/install starter - AR15.30-P-7100ELB

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts   AH00.00-N-0001-01A
1 Deactivate easy entry/exit feature Vehicles with 4MATIC with code (275) Memory package (driver's seat, steering column, mirrors)  
2 Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position and secure steering wheel with holding device Vehicles with 4MATIC
NOTES
The steering wheel must not be turned when detaching steering coupling.
The clock spring contact may be destroyed otherwise.
 
SPECIAL TOOL Retainer device Fig 2
3 Detach ground line from battery   AR54.10-P-0003EW
NOTES Notes on battery AH54.10-P-0001-01A
4 Remove bottom engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105EW
5 Remove left catalytic converter ENGINE 157 in MODEL 212, 218 with TRANSMISSION 722.97 AR49.10-P-7100EL
6 Remove steering coupling Vehicles with 4MATIC AR46.10-P-8000EW
7 Remove heat shield over starter (M1) IMPORTANT For vehicles with 4MATIC the starter (M1) is installed on the left engine side and for vehicles without 4MATIC it is installed on the right engine side.  
8 Detach contact protection (3) and detach electrical line circuit 30 at starter (M1) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, connection for terminal designation 30 *BA15.30-P-1001-01J 
9 Detach electrical line of circuit 50 (4) at starter (M1) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, connection for terminal designation 50 *BA15.30-P-1002-01J 
10 Unclip electrical line (2) at starter (M1) and crankcase    
11 Remove screw/bolts (5) of starter (M1) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, starter to crankcase *BA15.30-P-1003-01J 
12 Remove starter (M1) from below    
INSPECT Check     
13 Check ring gear at the drive plate for wear and damage When replacing the starter (M1).
IMPORTANT Rotate engine at center bolt of the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation.
 
SPECIAL TOOL Socket wrench bit Fig 3
14 Install in the reverse order
