32 31 090 Removing and installing/replacing steering column

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Remove the top section of steering column casing .
Remove the left instrument panel trim at the bottom.
Remove the support for the trim panel of the dashboard on the bottom (R60/R61).
Remove lower section of steering column shroud .
Remove revcounter . See 62 10 100 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING STEERING COLUMN REVCOUNTER .

IMPORTANT: If the steering spindle is separated from the steering gear, this can result in damage to the steering column switch cluster when the steering wheel is turned!

After releasing screw (2), steering shaft must be retained with steering lock!

Nut (1) must be counter supported with open-end spanner AF 11 during disassembly and installation. Cage nut (1) can break off if this is not observed! Steering column must be replaced when cage nut (1) is damaged!

Release screw (1) with reversible ratchet and extension, and simultaneously counter support with open-end spanner AF 11!. Pull off lower section of steering shaft from steering gear and swing towards rear.

Installation note: Clean the thread to remove all remnants of the screw locking adhesive.

Replace screw.

Tightening torque 32 31 2AZ.

Disconnect plug connections (1) on steering column switch cluster.
