	Remove
1	Remove center engine compartment lining.		AR61.20-P-1105S
2	Remove steering knuckle.	Model 223 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive) except code Z07 (B7 armoring on special protection version)	AR33.25-P-0400S
		Model 223 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive) with code Z07 (B7 armoring on special protection version)	AR33.25-P-0400SG
3	Pull right front axle shaft (4) out of front axle differential using impact extractor (02) and pull-off device (03).	Aid of helper required. Impact extractor	Fig 3

4	Remove left front axle shaft (4) from intermediate shaft (1) using impact extractor (02) and pull-off device (03).	If left front axle shaft (4) is seized, it must be removed together with intermediate shaft (1). If this is not observed, the oil pan may become damaged. Aid of helper required. 		Extraction tool If left front axle shaft (4) is seized, ↓ remove retaining ring (2) at intermediate shaft (1). Then remove left front axle shaft (4) together with intermediate shaft (1) and disconnect from each other when removed.	Fig 4
5	Remove snap ring (4s) from right front axle shaft (4).	When removing right front axle shaft (4).
6	Remove snap ring (1s) from intermediate shaft (1).	When removing left front axle shaft (4).
7	Remove radial shaft sealing ring at outer right front axle differential.	When removing right front axle shaft (4). Model 223 with engine 177.8 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)	AR33.30-P-0540SCA
		Model 223 with engine 176, 256, 279, 656 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)	AR33.30-P-0540S
	Check
8	Check axle boots of front axle shaft (4).	If an axle boot is damaged, ↓ Replace front axle shaft (4).
	Install
9	Install new radial shaft sealing ring at outer right front axle differential.	When installing right front axle shaft (4). Model 223 with engine 177.8 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)	AR33.30-P-0540SCA
		Model 223 with engine 176, 256, 279, 656 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)	AR33.30-P-0540S
10	Insert assembly tool into replaced radial shaft sealing ring of front axle differential.	When installing right front axle shaft (4). Assembly tool	Fig 5
11	Install intermediate shaft (1).	If intermediate shaft (1) was removed.	AR33.30-P-0625S
12	Attach new snap ring (4s) at right front axle shaft (4).	When installing right front axle shaft (4). Apply light coating of grease to snap ring (4s). Klueber Microlube GNY 202	*BR00.45-Z-1071-06A
13	Attach new snap ring (1s) at intermediate shaft (1).	When installing left front axle shaft (4). Apply light coating of grease to snap ring (1s). Klueber Microlube GNY 202	*BR00.45-Z-1071-06A
14	Apply light coating of grease to gearing of front axle shafts (4).	Klueber Microlube GNY 202	*BR00.45-Z-1071-06A
15	Slide left front axle shaft (4) onto intermediate shaft (1) and engage completely.
16	Check whether left front axle shaft (4) is correctly engaged at intermediate shaft (1) by sharply pulling on left front axle shaft (4).	If left front axle shaft (4) can be pulled off intermediate shaft (1), ↓ slide left front axle shaft (4) all the way onto intermediate shaft (1) until it noticeably engages at snap ring (1s).
17	Press right front axle shaft (4) into front axle differential and engage completely.
18	Check whether right front axle shaft (4) is correctly engaged in front axle differential by sharply pulling on right front axle shaft (4).	If right front axle shaft (4) can be pulled out of front axle differential, ↓ slide right front axle shaft (4) all the way into front axle differential until it noticeably engages at snap ring (4s).
19	Install steering knuckle.	Model 223 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive) except code Z07 (B7 armoring on special protection version)	AR33.25-P-0400S

20	Drain front axle differential oil and refill.		AR33.25-P-0300-01S
