Remove/Install Spring Control Arm On Front Axle - AR33.15-P-0170FR

Check special tools for damage and proper operation (visual inspection). Wear protective gloves. AS00.00-Z-0001-01A
CAUTION Risk of injury  caused by scraping or cutting body parts on sharp vehicle parts Always wear protective gloves when working on or near sharp and non-deburred vehicle parts.

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Vent pressure in AIRMATIC system using vehicle diagnosis system. Model 257
with code 489 (AIR BODY CONTROL)
 
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS     AD00.00-P-2000-06FR
2 Remove center and rear engine compartment lining.   AR61.20-P-1105FR
3 Remove front wheel.   AR40.10-P-1102A
4 Unhook electric lines (10) from holder (11) and place to one side. Model 257
with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)
NOTES
Do not kink, crush or stretch electric lines. Otherwise, the lines will be damaged and malfunctions will occur.
 
5 Unscrew nut (4) and remove suspension strut (5) from spring link (2). Model 257
with code 489 (AIR BODY CONTROL)

NOTES
Route suspension strut (5) on spring control arm (2) in suspension strut linkage area to one side.
Otherwise, the elastomer boot on the suspension strut joint will be damaged.

6 Unscrew nut (6) and remove torsion bar linkage (7) from spring link (2). Model 257

NOTES
The ball head must be counterheld and an impact wrench/driver must not be used. Otherwise the ball head gets damaged.
 
7 Remove stabilizer bar from front axle. Model 257
with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)
IMPORTANT The torsion bar linkage (7) remains installed on the stabilizer bar.

8 Unscrew nut (8) and remove spring link (2) from front axle carrier (9). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, spring control arm to front axle carrier *BA33.20-P-1002-01U 
9 Unscrew nut (1), detach and remove spring link (2) from steering knuckle (3). NOTES
Counterhold the ball head and do not use an impact wrench/driver.
Otherwise the ball head or steering knuckle (3 may be damaged.
 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, spring control arm to steering knuckle *BA33.20-P-1001-01U 
    SPECIAL TOOL Model 257 with engine 256 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)

10 Remove holder (11) from spring link (2). Model 257
with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)
When replacing the spring control arm (2).
 
INSPECT Check     
11 Check sealing bellows and ball head of spring link (2) for damage. If damage is found,

replace spring link (2).
 
12 Check suspension strut linkage on spring link (2) for damage. If damage is found,

replace spring link (2).
 
13 Check suspension strut linkage on spring link (2) for damage. Model 257

If damage is found,

replace spring link (2).
 
14 Check if an elastomer bearing for caster correction is installed in the previously-installed spring link (2). When replacing the spring control arm (2).
IMPORTANT The elastomer bearing for caster correction has an off-center bearing core.
If an elastomer bearing for caster correction is installed,

remove elastomer bearing of new spring link (2) and install a corresponding elastomer bearing for caster correction.

15 Check elastomer bearing in spring link (2) for damage. SPECIAL TOOL Model 257

When reusing the spring link (2).

    IMPORTANT The neutral elastomer bearing has a central bearing core.
The elastomer bearing for caster correction has an off-center bearing core.
If damage is found and a neutral elastomer bearing is installed,

replace spring link (2).
If damage is found and an elastomer bearing for camber correction is installed,

replace elastomer bearing on spring link (2).
