Remove/Install Front Suspension Strut - AR32.25-P-1017MFA

Model 118, 177, 243, 247

DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Detach front left or right brake caliper and secure at vehicle free of tension with lines still connected. Model 118.351/353/354/651/653/654, 177.051/053/054/151/951, 247.651/751/753/754 AR42.10-P-0070MFB
    Model 118 (except 118.351/353/354/651/653/654), 177 (except 177.051/053/054/151/951), 243, 247 (except 247.651/751/753/754) 1-piston floating caliper brake
NOTES Do not crush or kink or subject lines to tension Otherwise, the lines will be damaged and function will be impaired.

    IMPORTANT Do not twist the brake hose, and make sure that it is routed correctly.  
2 Detach tie rod from steering knuckle (5).   AR46.40-P-0200-02MFA
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, tie rod to steering knuckle *BA46.40-P-1001-01Q 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Press Fig 4

3 Unscrew nut from supporting joint and remove supporting joint from steering knuckle (5).
Note on calculation of tightening torque when using insertion or socket tools with various effective lengths

    NOTES Counterhold the ball head and do not use an impact wrench/driver.
Otherwise the ball head or sealing bellows will be damaged.
IMPORTANT Model 118, 177, 243, 247.0
Commercially available devices/tools  A combination wrench
 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, supporting ball joint/transverse control arm to steering knuckle *BA33.15-P-1005-01F 
    SPECIAL TOOL Model 247.6/7 Counterholder Fig 8
    SPECIAL TOOL Model 247.6/7 Socket wrench Fig 2
4 Support steering knuckle (5) and secure to prevent it falling.    
REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS 000 588 11 62 00 Major assembly mount   WS01.00-P-0092B
5 Extend front axle shaft out of wheel hub and secure against falling down. NOTES Do not knock a seized front axle shaft out of the wheel hub.
Otherwise the angular-contact ball bearing will be damaged.
 
    SPECIAL TOOL Extraction and insertion tool
If the front axle shaft is seized,

Pry front axle shaft out of wheel hub.

6 Secure suspension strut (1) to prevent it falling.    
7 Remove nut (2). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, torsion bar linkage to suspension strut/stabilizer bar *BA32.35-P-1002-02A 
8 Remove nut (3) and screw (4). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, spring strut to steering knuckle *BA32.25-P-1003-04J 
9 Spread steering knuckle (5) using spreading tool until suspension strut (1) detaches from steering knuckle (5). SPECIAL TOOL Spreader Fig 6
10 Release and disconnect electrical connector (6). Model 118, 177, 247
with code 459 (Steel suspension with adjustable damping)
 
11 Unscrew screws (7) and remove suspension strut (1). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, suspension strut to suspension strut tower *BA32.25-P-1002-04J 
INSPECT Check     
12 Check suspension strut (1). If damage is present,

Replace corresponding component.
 
      AR32.25-P-1018MFA 
13 Install in the reverse order.
