REMOVING Remove     
1 Perform power disconnect of high-voltage on-board electrical system. Model 222.004/057/104/157/163 AR54.10-P-1150LF
2 Deactivate easy entry and exit feature for driver's seat and steering wheel. Model 217

IMPORTANT See vehicle operating instructions.
 
3 Turn steering wheel to center position (front wheels in straight-ahead position) and fix in place using holding device. NOTES Do not turn steering wheel with steering coupling removed. AR46.20-P-0600-01RK 
    Clock spring contact will otherwise be destroyed.

5.1 Remove rear and center section of lower engine compartment lining. Model 217, 222

9 Release and disconnect electrical connector (7).    
10 Unscrew screw (8) and place cable duct (9) to one side. Model 217, 222

11 Attach engine support fixture and lift engine up to engine mount end stop. Model 217

12.1 Support rack-and-pinion steering (10) using suitable means and secure to prevent it from falling down. Model 217, 222

12.2 Support rack-and-pinion steering (10) on guard plate (14) and secure to prevent it from falling down. Model 217, 222

13 Remove screws (5, 6). IMPORTANT Model 217, 222
with code M005 (Vehicles with 4 MATIC/all-wheel drive) Counterhold nuts with suitable tool (arrow).
 
14.1 Unscrew screws (1, 2, 3, 4) and remove mounting plates (11). Model 217, 222

14.2 Unscrew screws (1, 2, 12, 13). Model 217, 222
with code M005 (Vehicles with 4 MATIC/all-wheel drive)
 
15.1 Remove rack-and-pinion steering (10). Model 217, 222
except code M005 (Vehicles with 4 MATIC/all-wheel drive)
 
15.2 Remove rack-and-pinion steering (10) and take guard plate (14) off rack-and-pinion steering (10). Model 217, 222
with code M005 (Vehicles with 4 MATIC/all-wheel drive)
 
INSTALLING Install     
16 Detach protective foil of insulating plate (15) and bond insulating plate (15) to electrical power steering control unit (16). Model 217

Model 222.179 with engine 279.980 When replacing the rack-and-pinion steering (10).
IMPORTANT Check that the insulating plate (15) is positioned correctly.
Position at the cutout on the electrical power steering control unit (16) and stick on.
 
17.1 Install rack-and-pinion steering (10). Model 217, 222
except code M005 (Vehicles with 4 MATIC/all-wheel drive)
IMPORTANT Replace bolts (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) and mounting plates (11).
 
    IMPORTANT Fit the bolts (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) but do not tighten.  
17.2 Install rack-and-pinion steering (10) with guard plate (14). Model 217, 222
with code M005 (Vehicles with 4 MATIC/all-wheel drive)
IMPORTANT Replace bolts (1, 2, 5, 6, 12, 13).
IMPORTANT Counterhold nuts of screws/bolts (5, 6) with suitable tool (arrow).
IMPORTANT Fit the screws/bolts (1, 2, 5, 6, 12, 13) but do not tighten.
 
18.1 Tighten screws (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) to torque. Model 217, 222
except code M005 (Vehicles with 4 MATIC/all-wheel drive)
IMPORTANT When tightening, observe the following sequence: screws (5, 6, 1, 2, 3, 4).

27 Activate easy entry/exit feature for driver's seat and steering wheel. Model 217, 222

  Concluding tasks     
28 Connect vehicle diagnosis system and perform commissioning of rack-and-pinion steering (10). After replacing rack-and-pinion steering (10).  
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS     AD00.00-P-2000-04B
29 Add new steering number of rack-and-pinion steering (10) to online vehicle data card via the vehicle documentation system (VeDoc). After replacing rack-and-pinion steering (10).
IMPORTANT Redocumentation is absolutely essential.
 
30 Put the high-voltage on-board electrical system into operation. Model 222.004/057/104/157/163 AR54.10-P-1150LF
31 Perform chassis alignment.   AR40.20-P-0200LF
