Remove/Install Camshaft Positioner - AR05.20-P-7204MFC

Do not fill engine oil into beverage containers.

REMOVING Remove     
1 Remove front right fender liner.   AR88.10-P-1301MFA
2 Turn engine at center bolt of crankshaft in direction of engine rotation to top dead center (ignition TDC) at cylinder 1. IMPORTANT The TDC marking on belt pulley/vibration damper must be aligned with positioning edge on timing case cover.

3 Remove cylinder head cover.   AR01.20-P-5014MFC
4 Install hold-down tool (01a) of camshafts (4) with holding devices (02a, 02e) for camshafts (4). IMPORTANT Ensure use of the correct bearing bracket on the SPECIAL TOOL holding device (02a, 02e).
IMPORTANT Use Ø 29 mm inserts.

5 Remove the chain tensioner.   AR05.10-P-7800MFC 
6 Unfasten control valve (2) for the respective camshaft positioner (1) and remove. SPECIAL TOOL Holding device Fig 1

7 Lift off timing chain (3) from corresponding camshaft positioner (1) and remove corresponding camshaft positioner (1). IMPORTANT Mark installation position of the timing chain (3) relative to the camshaft positioner (1).  
INSPECT Check     
8 Check toothing of camshaft positioner (1) for damage. If there is a problem:

Replace camshaft positioner (1).
 
9 Check timing chain (3) for damage. If there is a problem:

replace timing chain (3).

INSTALLING Install     
10 Install camshaft positioner (1) and tighten control valve (2) slightly by hand.    
REFER TO CAPACITIES & SPECIFICATIONS Specified engine oils for Cars, Vans (service) - Overview IMPORTANT Observe markings on installation position of timing chain (3).
IMPORTANT During installation of camshaft positioner (1) and/or timing chain (3), ensure that crankshaft is not twisted.
IMPORTANT The final torque of the control valve (2) is only realized after the chain tensioner has been installed.
IMPORTANT It must still be possible to turn the camshaft positioner (1) to the camshaft (4).
IMPORTANT Wet thread and bolt head contact surface of control valve (2) with engine oil. Tighten control valve (2) evenly without discontinuity.

11 Install the chain tensioner.   AR05.10-P-7800MFC 
12 Tighten control valve (2) of corresponding camshaft positioner (1) to final torque. TORQUE SPECIFICATION Center valve, pulse wheel/camshaft adjuster to camshaft *BA05.20-P-1002-02K

13 Remove hold-down tool (01a) of camshafts (4) with holding devices (02a, 02e) for camshafts (4). SPECIAL TOOL Holding device Fig 1
14 Install cylinder head cover. IMPORTANT Do not install upper engine cover until after the leak test. AR01.20-P-5014MFC
INSPECT Check     
15 Crank engine at center bolt of crankshaft in direction of engine rotation x 2 and position again at top dead center (ignition TDC) at cylinder 1. SPECIAL TOOL Socket wrench bit Fig 3
16 Check basic position of camshafts (4) and correct if necessary.   AR05.20-P-6010MFC 
WARNING Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
17 Perform engine test run. While doing so, check engine for proper operation and leak tightness.    
18 Install front right fender liner.   AR88.10-P-1301MFA
19 Install upper engine cover.
