Remove/Install Cylinder Head Cover - AR01.20-P-5014MFC

MODIFICATION NOTES

30.06.2023 Replace screws of cylinder head cover (1). Operation step 23.

WARNING Risk of injury  to skin and eyes suffering scalding from contact with hot coolantspray. Risk of poisoning  from swallowing coolant. Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90°C. Open cap slowly and release the overpressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers.
Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.

Do not fill Engine oil into beverage containers.

REMOVING Remove     
1 Shift transmission to neutral position and secure vehicle against rolling away.    
2 Remove ground line of on-board electrical system battery (G1).   AR54.10-P-0003MFA
3 Remove upper Engine cover.    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP01.10-P-2405-01C
4 Remove upper part of charge air pipe from charge air cooler toward charge-air distributor. Engine 260 in model 118, 177, 247 except code M016 (Uprated Engine) AR09.41-P-1331MFC
5 Remove ignition coils.   AR15.12-P-2003MFC
6 Remove fuel distributor with fuel injectors.   AR07.03-P-1055MFC
7 Remove the high-pressure pump.   AR07.02-P-1020MFC
8 Remove intake camshaft valve lift adjustment actuator.   AR05.20-P-6500MFC
9 Remove filler neck (4), place to one side with connected bleed line and seal openings with clean, lint-free rags.    
10 Remove the vacuum pump. Engine 260 in model 118, 177, 247 with code M016 (Uprated Engine) AR43.05-P-1320MFB

11 Remove the coolant expansion reservoir.   AR20.30-P-4949MFD
12 Remove lifting lugs (6).    
13 Remove charge air pipe bracket from throttle valve actuator (M16/6).    
14 Remove cap (7) between cylinder head cover (1) and cylinder head using suitable tool.    
15 Remove timing case cover.   AR01.40-P-8001MFC 
16 Release bolts of cylinder head cover (1) in reverse order to tightening procedure and remove. Bolt tightening procedure for cylinder head cover AR01.20-P-5014-03MT 
17 Pry off cylinder head cover (1) from cylinder head carefully. NOTES Do not pound in tool for prying off between cylinder head cover (1) and cylinder head.
The sealing surfaces can be damaged otherwise.
IMPORTANT Use puller screw if necessary.
 
18 Check camshafts and camshaft bearing points in cylinder head cover (1) and the cylinder head for galling and scoring.

    IMPORTANT Cylinder head cover (1) and cylinder head form a unit and can thus only be replaced together.
IMPORTANT The cylinder head can also be replaced without replacing the camshaft.
If there are problems:

Replace camshafts and/or cylinder head cover (1) together with cylinder head. Replace cylinder head

CLEAN Clean     
19 Clean the sealing surfaces on cylinder head.   AR01.00-P-0050-01A 
    NOTES Do not use any sharp-edged tools or abrasive paper.
The sealing surfaces can be damaged otherwise.
Loctite 7063 (400 ml) cleaning spray

20 Clean sealing surfaces at cylinder head cover (1).   AR01.00-P-0050-01A 
    NOTES Do not use any sharp-edged tools or abrasive paper.
The sealing surfaces can be damaged otherwise.
Loctite 7063 (400 ml) cleaning spray

INSTALLING Install     
21 Apply sealant to cylinder head cover (1).

  Notes on application of flange sealants to seal major assemblies   AH00.00-P-0500-01MNE
    IMPORTANT Replace sealing ring of coolant vent line in the cylinder head.
Sealant, Loctite 5970, 50 ml

22 Position cylinder head cover (1) on cylinder head.    
23 Manually attach bolts of cylinder head cover (1) and tighten in sequence of tightening procedure. Bolt tightening procedure for cylinder head cover AR01.20-P-5014-03MT 
    IMPORTANT Replace screws of cylinder head cover (1).
IMPORTANT Observe tightening procedure.
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, cylinder head cover to cylinder head

24 Install timing case cover.   AR01.40-P-8001MFC 
25 Install cap (7) between cylinder head cover (1) and cylinder head. IMPORTANT Replace cap (7).  
26 Install charge air pipe bracket on throttle valve actuator (M16/6). TORQUE SPECIFICATION M6 *BA00.10-P-1002-01A 
27 Install lifting lugs (6). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, upper front exhaust system holder to lifting eye/exhaust system *BA49.10-P-1002-02Q 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, lifting eye at rear right to cylinder head/cylinder head cover *BA01.30-P-1007-01Y 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, lifting eye at front right to cylinder head *BA01.30-P-1005-01Y 
28 Install coolant expansion reservoir.   AR20.30-P-4949MFD
29 Install the vacuum pump. Engine 260 in model 118, 177, 247 with code M016 (Uprated Engine) AR43.05-P-1320MFB
    Engine 260 in model 118, 177, 247 except code M016 (Uprated Engine) AR43.05-P-1320MFC
30 Remove rags and install filler neck (4) with connected bleed line. IMPORTANT Replace seal.
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, filler neck to cylinder head cover

31 Install intake camshaft valve lift adjustment actuator.   AR05.20-P-6500MFC
32 Install the high-pressure pump.   AR07.02-P-1020MFC
33 Install fuel distributor with fuel injectors.   AR07.03-P-1055MFC
34 Install ignition coils.   AR15.12-P-2003MFC
35 Install upper part of charge air pipe from charge air cooler to charge-air distributor. Engine 260 in model 118, 177, 247 except code M016 (Uprated Engine) AR09.41-P-1331MFC
36 Attach ground line of on-board electrical system battery (G1).   AR54.10-P-0003MFA
INSPECT Check     
37 Check and correct Engine oil level.    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP18.00-P-1812MFA
WARNING Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when Engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the Engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
38 Perform Engine test run. While doing so, check Engine for proper operation and leak tightness.    
39 Install upper Engine cover.
