Remove/Install Steering Coupling - AR46.10-P-8000RG

DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
WARNING Risk of injury.  Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary. AS00.00-Z-0002-01A
CAUTION Risk of injury  caused by scraping or cutting body parts on sharp vehicle parts Always wear protective gloves when working on or near sharp and non-deburred vehicle parts. AS00.00-Z-0017-01A
    Deburr repair panels.

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Deactivate easy entry and exit feature for driver's seat and steering wheel. NOTES
The easy entry and exit feature for driver's seat and steering wheel must be deactivated. When the holding device is subsequently attached to the steering wheel, damage can otherwise occur when the position of the driver seat and steering wheel changes.
 
    IMPORTANT Only on vehicles with CODE P64 (Memory package).  
2 Switch off ignition, remove transmitter key if necessary and place transmitter key outside of KEYLESS-GO transmission range.    
3 Bring steering wheel into center position and fasten with holding device. NOTES
Do not twist steering wheel after removal of steering coupling (3).
Otherwise, it destroys the clock spring contact in the steering column tube module.

4 Lift vehicle with vehicle lift.   AR00.60-P-1000RG
5 Remove lower engine compartment lining. Model 190.381 AR61.20-P-1105RGB
    Model 190 (except 190.381) AR61.20-P-1105RG
    IMPORTANT Remove only the center engine compartment paneling.  
    INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only install the center engine compartment paneling after a test run has been performed.  
6 Remove bolt (2). IMPORTANT The steering coupling (3) remains on the rack-and-pinion steering (1)  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Safety screw and steering coupling locknut to rack-and-pinion steering *BA46.10-P-1002-01E 
7 Lower vehicle and open hood.

8 Remove left bulkhead (4).    
9 Unhook switchover valve (Y58/1) from holder.    
10 Remove screw (5). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, steering coupling to steering shaft *BA46.10-P-1001-01E 
11 Remove screws (6) and the holder (7) of the steering coupling (3) from longitudinal member. INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Ensure that holder (7) is seated correctly on longitudinal member and tighten screws (6) only slightly by hand initially.  
    INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only tighten the screws (6) to the specified torque when the screw (5) (steering coupling (3) to rack-and-pinion steering (1)) and the screw (2) (steering coupling (3) to lower steering shaft (8)) are tightened to the specified torque.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, steering shaft bearing bracket to longitudinal member *BA46.10-P-1009-01E 
12 Detach steering coupling (3) from lower steering shaft (8) in direction of arrow. INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Make sure that the seal bellows is seated correctly.  
13 Release steering coupling (3) from rack-and-pinion steering (1) and remove steering coupling (3) toward rear and downward. NOTES
Do not use force such as hammer blows or excessive leverage.
Damage to the steering coupling (3) and to the rack-and-pinion steering (1) can otherwise occur.
 
    INSTALLATION IMPORTANT First attach the steering coupling (3) at the correct installation position on the rack-and-pinion steering (1).  
14 Install in the reverse order.
