DANGER Risk of injury  to skin or eyes from hydraulic fluid spraying out under pressure. Risk of poisoning from swallowing hydraulic fluid. Depressurize hydraulic system completely before starting any work on it. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses. AS00.00-Z-0013-01A
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by pinching or crushing when working on springs or spring bodies that are under tension Use only approved tensioning devices; additionally screen off hazardous area if necessary. Check special tools for damage and proper operation (visual inspection). Wear protective gloves. AS00.00-Z-0001-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Secure vehicle on vehicle lift   AR00.60-P-0100TX
2 Lift vehicle on vehicle lift   AR00.60-P-1000TX
3 Remove the front wheels    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP40.10-P-4050EW
4 Open engine hood    
5 Remove engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105RK
6 Remove bolts (12) from engine mount at front axle carrier (8) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front engine mount to front axle carrier *BA22.10-P-1002-03E 
7 Mount engine hoist (4)   AR33.10-P-0105RK 
8 Secure radiator (1) against falling down IMPORTANT Secure radiator (1) to front module (2) with cable ties.  
9 Remove diagonal struts (7) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Do not tighten the bolts until the vehicle is in a ready-to-drive condition.
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front diagonal strut to front axle carrier

10.1 Release pressure in ABC system Model 231.### ## up to 021273
with code 487 (Active Body Control (ABC))
NOTES Before the hydraulic system is opened, the area around the separation point must be cleaned thoroughly.
Minute dirt particles in the hydraulic components can otherwise lead to malfunctions or a total failure of the hydraulic system.

    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bleed screw on soldered fitting in hydraulic line *BA32.50-P-1001-02B

10.2 Release pressure in ABC system using Star Diagnosis Model 231.### ## as of 021274

11 Disconnect electrical connector (3) On vehicles with water-cooled charge air cooling.  
12 Disconnect electrical connections (13)    
13 Unhook steering gear wiring harness (11) at front axle carrier (8) and place to one side    
14 Remove both rear fender liner in fender   AR88.10-P-1300RK
15 Remove front right fender liner in front fender Model 231 with engine 279 AR88.10-P-1300RK
16 Unhook brake hoses (6) from stabilizer (5) bar Model 231
except code 487 (Active Body Control (ABC))
 
17 Detach stabilizer bar link rods from stabilizer bar Model 231
except code 487 (Active Body Control (ABC))
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Tighten bolts and nuts only when vehicle is in the ready-to-drive condition.

18 Detach suspension struts from spring control arms INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Tighten bolts and nuts only when vehicle is in the ready-to-drive condition. AR32.25-P-1017RK
19 Clamp off coolant hoses (15, 16) with clamping devices (14) Model 231 with engine 279
SPECIAL TOOL Clamp

20.1 Detach circulation pump of charge air cooler (M44) with the connected lines from front axle carrier and place to one side Model 231 with engine 157, 276, 278
On vehicles with water-cooled charge air cooling.
 
20.2 Detach coolant hose (16) from low-temperature circuit additional engine radiator Model 231 with engine 279
IMPORTANT Collect the coolant in a suitable container.
 
21 Disconnect lower steering shaft at steering coupling   AR46.10-P-8000RK
22 Support front axle carrier (8) and lash securely    
REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS 000 588 11 62 00 Major assembly mount   WS01.00-P-0092B
REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS 000 588 10 62 00 Support plate INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Make sure that the guide pin of the front axle carrier is seated correctly in the body shell. WS26.00-P-3309B
23 Remove screw/bolts (17, 18) Model 231 with engine 279
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front axle carrier to cooler mounting console
*BA33.10-P-1002-01O 
24 Remove bolts (9, 10) NOTES Bolts (10) are self-tapping bolts. These bolts must not be inserted or removed using an impact wrench.
Otherwise the thread in the longitudinal member could get damaged.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace bolts (10).
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front axle carrier to longitudinal member
*BA33.10-P-1001-01O 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front axle carrier to cooler mounting console *BA33.10-P-1002-01O 
25 Lower front axle carrier (8) NOTES Do not lower front axle carrier (8) too much. Otherwise lines and components could get damaged.  
26 Install in the reverse order    
27 Fill and bleed ABC system Model 231
with code 487 (Active Body Control (ABC))

28 Fill and bleed low-temperature circuit coolant Model 231 with engine 279 AR09.41-P-6834RKC
29 Perform wheel alignment check   AR40.20-P-0200R
