Remove/Install Complete Rear Axle - AR35.10-P-0010GW

Model 463 (except 463.234/255/270/271/274) 

as of model year 2013 up to model year 2019

CAUTION Risk of poisoning  from swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury  from skin and eye contact with brake fluid Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A
  Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Before starting the engine, actuate brake pedal several times until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system. AS42.50-Z-0002-01A

REMOVING Remove     
1 Detach brake cable of parking brake from parking brake lever   AR42.20-P-0541GW
2 Remove wheel and tire assemblies on rear axle    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP40.10-P-4050G
3 Drain oil from differential into a suitable container When disassembling rear axle.  
4 Mark installation position of propeller shaft (11) in relation to rear axle.    
5 Unscrew nuts (12) of propeller shaft (11)    
6 Detach propeller shaft (11) at rear axle and fasten to frame    
7 Unscrew union nut and disconnect electrical connection (4) on differential lock shift cylinder    
8 Remove rear axle RPM sensor   AR42.30-P-0714GW
9 Detach hydraulic lines (13) from rear axle NOTES The hydraulic fluid reservoir for the brake fluid must not be allowed to run empty.
Otherwise difficulties may be encountered when bleeding.

10 Seal exposed connections with plugs SPECIAL TOOL Record plug Fig 3
11 Unscrew retaining bracket for left level sensor and place left level sensor linkage to one side Model 463 (except 463.234/255/270/271/274) as of model year 2016 up to model year 2019 except code ZQ0 (G 500 4x42 )  
12 Detach axle ventilation of rear axle and place to one side    
13 Support rear axle

14 Remove screw/bolt (1) with suspension compressed    
15 Unscrew transverse control arm (3) at frame    
16 Remove screws/bolts (10) of shock absorbers (7)    
17 Detach brake cable of parking brake from trailing arm (6) and from under floor   AR42.20-P-0541GW
18 Pull brake cable of parking brake out of rubber grommet on under floor   AR42.20-P-0541GW
19 Raise vehicle or lower rear axle until rear axle springs (8) can be removed

20 Remove rear axle springs (8)    
21 Unscrew nut (14) and detach trailing arm (6) from frame    
22 Remove rear axle toward rear IMPORTANT Two helpers required.  
23 Remove screw/bolt (2) and take transverse control arm (3) off rear axle When replacing rear axle.  
24 Remove screws/bolts (15) and detach trailing arm (6) from rear axle When replacing rear axle.  
INSPECT Check     
25 Check elastomer bearings (5, 9) of trailing arms (6) If a problem arises  
    ↓  
    Replace elastomer bearings (5, 9) of trailing arms (6) AR35.15-P-0101GW 
26 Check elastomer bearing of transverse control arm (3) If a problem arises  
    ↓  
    Replace elastomer bearing of transverse control arm (3)  
INSTALLING Install     
27 Screw trailing arm (6) securely to rear axle using screws/bolts (15) When replacing rear axle.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut/bolt, trailing arm to axle *BA35.15-P-1002-02A 
28 Attach transverse control arm (3) to rear axle and screw on screw/bolt (2) until it makes contact When replacing rear axle.  
    NOTES The bolt (2) may only be tightened when the vehicle is in a ready-to-drive condition and the suspension is compressed. Otherwise the elastomer bearings will be torsionally loaded.  
29 Push rear axle from rear under vehicle and position below frame at installation position IMPORTANT Two helpers required.

30 Lower vehicle or raise rear axle until trailing arms (6) can be inserted horizontally into mounting brackets on frame

31 Secure trailing arm (6) to frame using nut (14) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, trailing arm to frame *BA35.15-P-1001-02A 
32 Install rear axle springs (8) IMPORTANT It must be ensured that the rear axle spring (8) is seated correctly in the spring retainer.  
33 Raise rear axle until screws/bolts of shock absorbers (10) can be inserted into shock absorber brackets without being tilted

34 Tighten screws/bolts of shock absorbers (10) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, shock absorber to rear axle *BA32.25-P-1001-03E 
35 Lower vehicle or raise rear axle until screw/bolt (1) can be installed without being tilted

36 Mount transverse control arm (3) on frame and screw in screw/bolt (1) until it makes contact NOTES The screw/bolt (1) may only be tightened when the vehicle is in a ready-to-drive condition and the suspension is compressed.
Otherwise the elastomer bearings will be torsionally loaded.		  
37 Slide brake cable of parking brake into rubber grommet on under floor   AR42.20-P-0541GW
38 Attach brake cable of parking brake to trailing arm (6) and to under floor   AR42.20-P-0541GW
39 Attach axle ventilation to rear axle IMPORTANT The seals must be replaced.  
40 Secure left level sensor linkage to trailing arm (6) using retaining bracket Model 463 (except 463.234/255/270/271/274) as of model year 2016 up to model year 2019 except code ZQ0 (G 500 4x42 )  
41 Remove stop plugs and attach hydraulic lines (13) to rear axle TORQUE SPECIFICATION Brake line to brake hose *BA42.10-P-1001-04B

42 Install rear axle RPM sensor   AR42.30-P-0714GW
43 Connect electrical connection (4) on differential lock shift cylinder    
44 Mount propeller shaft (11) and tighten nuts (12) IMPORTANT It is important to observe the marking indicating the installation position.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, propeller shaft to transmission flange *BA41.10-P-1002-01B 
45 Fill rear axle differential with oil If rear axle has been disassembled.  
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   Model 463 (except 463.234/255/270/271/274) as of model year 2013 up to model year 2019 AP35.10-P-3510G 
46 Bleed brake system   AR42.10-P-0010GW
47 Bleed hydraulic system on differential lock   AR33.40-P-0701GW
48 Install wheel and tire assemblies on rear axle    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP40.10-P-4050G
49 Tighten screw/bolt (1) on transverse control arm (3) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, transverse control arm to frame *BA35.15-P-1006-02A 
50 Tighten bolt (2) on transverse control arm (3) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, transverse control arm to rear axle *BA35.15-P-1005-02A 
51 Attach brake cable of parking brake to parking brake lever   AR42.20-P-0541GW
52 Adjust parking brake on roller dynamometer   AR42.20-P-0550GW
