REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install

DANGER Risk of death  when touching components on vehicles with high-voltage on-board electrical system Do not touch components and open lines of the high-voltage on-board electrical system. Persons who wear electronic implants (e.g. cardiac pacemakers), must not  carry out any work on high-voltage on-board electrical systems. AS54.00-Z-0001-01A
1 Perform enable for the high voltage on-board electrical system Perform disable/initial startup for high-voltage on-board electrical system

NOTES Note on high-voltage on-board electrical system   AH54.00-P-0010-01A
    IMPORTANT After completing the work, attach initial startup event log together with the power disable event log to the vehicle file.  
2 Empty suspension struts using STAR DIAGNOSIS MODEL 221 (except 221.095/195) with CODE 489 (AIRMATIC)  
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory   AD00.00-P-2000-04A
3 Deactivate easy entry/exit feature MODEL 221 (except 221.095/195) with CODE 275 (Memory package)

4 Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position and secure steering wheel with holding device Except model 221.095/195
NOTES
The steering wheel must not be turned when detaching steering coupling.
The clock spring contact may be destroyed otherwise.

6 Remove air filter housing   AR09.10-P-1150SX
7 Remove lower engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105SX
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only install engine compartment paneling after engine test run.  
8 Remove transmission Model 221.0/1 with transmission 722.9 without 4MATIC AR27.10-P-0500SX
9 Remove heat shield below right CAT and over the power electronics ENGINE 272.974 in MODEL 221.095/195 AR08.10-P-0011SXH
10 Unfasten power electronics from bracket and intermediate housing and lay to one side with attached lines ENGINE 272.974 in MODEL 221.095/195 AR08.10-P-0011SXH
11 Detach retaining clamp for power electronics coolant line to DC/DC converter from front axle carrier ENGINE 272.974 in MODEL 221.095/195 AR08.10-P-0011SXH
12 Disconnect electrical connection on rotor position sensor and on crankshaft Hall sensor MODEL 221.095/195  
Remove/install rotor position sensor AR15.12-P-2139SXH
Remove/install crankshaft position sensor AR15.12-P-2133SX
13 Remove intermediate housing MODEL 221.095/195  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, intermediate housing to crankcase/oil pan *BA01.40-P-1013-01G 
14 Drain engine oil    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   ENGINE 272.975 AP18.00-P-0101VA
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   ENGINE 272.946/965/974 AP18.00-P-0101PIT
15 Remove oil pan bottom section (1)   AR01.45-P-7555SX 
16 Disconnect electrical connection (2) on switch (S43)    
17 Remove screw/bolt (1) Except model 221.095/195  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, oil pan to cylinder crankcase, timing case cover or rear cover *BA01.45-P-1002-01M 
18 Remove screw/bolts (1b) and take off bracket (5) with switch (S43) Except model 221.095/195  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, oil pan to cylinder crankcase, timing case cover or rear cover *BA01.45-P-1002-01M 
19 Remove oil dipstick guide tube (7)   AR18.40-P-3510SX
20 Detach left CAT from exhaust manifold and unclip connector of oxygen sensor (G3/3x1, G3/5x1) from bracket   AR49.10-P-7100SX
21 Detach engine mount (6) from front axle carrier (31) ENGINE 272.946/965 AR22.10-P-1260SX

22 Preassemble two adaptations on engine hoist MODEL 221.095/195
IMPORTANTTwo adaptations  are necessary when removing the oil pan (10) in order to guarantee secure lifting of the engine.

23 Mount engine hoist and raise engine   AR33.10-P-0105SX
NOTES
Lift out engine carefully and ensure that the engine does not touch the partition wall. Damage can occur to lines and cables otherwise.
IMPORTANT MODEL 221.095/195
Before lowering the engine, mount oil line loosely with the double clamp on electrical A/C compressor.
 
24 Disconnect steering coupling Model 221.0/1 AR46.10-P-8000SX
25 Loosen bolted connections for spring control arm on front axle carrier (31) Except code 487 (Active Body Control (ABC)) and code Z07 (Highest protection) AR33.15-P-0170SX
26 Detach bolted connections for strut rods on front axle carrier (31) Model 221.0/1 AR33.15-P-0160SX
27 Detach link rods from stabilizer bar Model 221.0/1 except code 487 (Active Body Control (ABC)) AR32.20-P-0300SX
28 Remove screw/bolt (1c) and double clamp (8) from oil line Except model 221.095/195  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, clamp of oil cooler oil line to bracket *BA27.55-P-1005-01D 
29 Unfasten double clamp bracket for oil line on electrical A/C compressor, twist and tighten screw/bolt again MODEL 221.095/195
IMPORTANT In order to allow moving in/moving out of the oil pan (10).
 
30 Detach retaining clamp (9) from front axle carrier (31) Except model 221.095/195  
31 Remove vehicle jack lift support point (18) from front axle carrier (31) Except model 221.095/195  
32 Remove screw/bolts from oil pan (10)   AR01.45-P-7500-06VA
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Pay attention to the varying bolt lengths and bolt diameters according to the bolt plan.  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, oil pan to cylinder crankcase, timing case cover or rear cover *BA01.45-P-1002-01M 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Oil pan top section to cylinder crankcase at transmission end *BA01.45-P-1005-01M 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, automatic transmission to engine *BA27.40-P-1008-01A 
33 Prop front axle carrier (31) with transmission jack (01) and transmission platform (02) Except model 221.095/195    
34 Remove screw/bolts (1d) from front axle carrier (31) Except model 221.095/195
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only tighten screw/bolts and nuts of suspension components when vehicle is in a ready-to-drive condition.
 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front axle carrier to longitudinal member *BA33.10-P-1001-01K 
35 Lower front axle carrier (31) Except model 221.095/195
NOTES
Lower front axle carrier (31) carefully.
The lines and cable can be damaged otherwise.
 
36 Detach oil pan (10) from crankcase and lay on front axle carrier (31)    
IMPORTANT Notes on sealant path for oil pan   AH01.45-P-0001-01VA
    NOTES
Carefully pry off the oil pan (10) from the crankcase.
The sealing surfaces can be damaged.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Apply sealant to sealing surface of oil pan (10).
 
    Loctite 5970 sealant *BR00.45-Z-1013-01A

37 Detach intake manifold (3) from oil pump (4) Except model 221.095/195  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, oil suction pipe to oil pump *BA18.10-P-1004-01B 
38 Remove oil pan (10) to the rear    
CLEAN Clean     
39 Clean sealing surfaces on the oil pan (10) and crankcase   AR01.00-P-0050-01A
NOTES
Do not use any sharp-edged tools or abrasive paper.
The sealing surfaces can get damaged otherwise.
 
Loctite 7200 *BR00.45-Z-1038-04A 
Loctite 7063 cleaning spray (150 ml) *BR00.45-Z-1046-04A 
40 Install in the reverse order    
41 Read out fault memory with STAR DIAGNOSIS and clear if necessary    
42 Perform wheel alignment check Model 221.0/1 AR40.20-P-0200SX
43 Check engine oil level approx. 5 min. after switching off the engine at operating temperature, correct if necessary

DANGER Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
44 Carry out an engine test run, checking the engine for proper operation and leaktightness
