REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by fingers being jammed or pinched when removing, installing or aligning hoods, doors, trunk lid/rear-end door or sliding roof. No parts of the body or limbs should be within the operating area when the components are moving. AS00.00-Z-0011-01A
NOTES Information on preventing damage to electronic components due to electrostatic discharge   AH54.00-P-0001-01A
NOTES Notes on avoiding damage through contamination and foreign objects   AH00.00-P-5000-01A
NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts   AH00.00-N-0001-01A

1 Completely relieve all pressure in the front suspension struts using STAR DIAGNOSIS Vehicles with AIRmatic  
2 Deactivate easy entry/exit function Vehicles with code (275) Memory package (driver's seat, steering column, mirrors)

3 Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position and secure steering wheel with holding device NOTES
The steering wheel must not be turned when detaching steering coupling.
Otherwise the clock spring contact will be destroyed.

4 Extract oil from power steering expansion reservoir SPECIAL TOOL Hand pump Fig 3
5 Detach ground line from battery   AR54.10-P-0003SX

6 Remove right upper charge air duct Vehicles without 4MATIC AR09.41-P-8620MMB
7 Mount engine hoist and raise engine slightly   AR33.10-P-0105SX
IMPORTANT Only raise engine sufficiently that the engine mounts are not under tension.  
8 Secure vehicle on the vehicle lift   AR00.60-P-0100SX
9 Remove lower engine compartment paneling ENGINE 157, 278 in MODEL 216, 221 with CODE Z07 (Top protection) AR61.20-P-1105SXS

10 Drain engine oil and catch in a suitable container    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   ENGINE 157 in MODEL 216, 221 AP18.00-P-0101EWG

11 Detach link rods from stabilizer bar Vehicles with AIRmatic  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, torsion bar linkage to torsion bar *BA32.20-P-1001-02O 
12 Remove front axle carrier Vehicles with 4MATIC AR33.10-P-0001SYZ
Vehicles without 4MATIC
IMPORTANT Only tighten screw/bolts and nuts of suspension components when vehicle is in a ready-to-drive condition.
IMPORTANT When working on the front axle, be careful not to scratch, scribe markings or notch the surfaces of aluminum parts. Otherwise the service life of the of the parts will be reduced.
IMPORTANT For vehicles with AIRmatic the torsion bar remains on the front axle carrier.

13 Remove front axle transmission Vehicles with 4MATIC AR33.30-P-0525SYZ
14 Remove ALT (G2) and remove downwards   AR15.40-P-5032MMB
IMPORTANT The fan unit and coolant hose from coolant pump to the cooler must not  be removed.  
15 Detach alternator cable set from oil pan (2) and place outside of working area Vehicles with 4MATIC  
16 Detach bracket for the ABC oil line at oil pan (2) Vehicles with code (487) Active Body Control (ABC)  
17 Remove front axle transmission support brace at oil pan (2) Vehicles with 4MATIC  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, front axle gear support brace to oil pan *BA01.45-P-1008-01E 
18 Detach clamps and bracket on transmission fluid lines Vehicles with 4MATIC AR27.55-P-0600SYZ
Vehicles without 4MATIC AR27.55-P-0600SX
19.1 Separate, unclip electrical connections on oil level sensor and set aside Engine 157  
AR18.40-P-5111MMB
19.2 Separate, unclip electrical connection on oil level check switch and set aside ENGINE 278  
AR18.40-P-5113MM
20 Detach oil lines (6) for turbocharger at oil pan (2) and set aside   AR18.30-P-6850MMB
21 Remove catalytic converter bracket between CAT and transmission TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, catalytic converter bracket to top bracket/transmission housing *BA49.10-P-1011-01Z 
22 Remove heat shield over starter Vehicles with 4MATIC  
23.1 Detach oil dipstick guide tube (5) from oil pan (2) and cylinder head cover and lay to the side in engine compartment Vehicles with 4MATIC
IMPORTANT Check sealing ring for oil dipstick guide tube(5) in oil pan (2) and replace if necessary.
 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, guide tube to oil pan *BA01.45-P-1004-01E 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, guide tube to cylinder head/cylinder head cover/front cover *BA01.45-P-1005-01E 
23.2 Remove oil dipstick guide tube (5) Vehicles without 4MATIC
IMPORTANT Check sealing ring for oil dipstick guide tube(5) in oil pan (2) and replace if necessary.
IMPORTANT Ensure correct routing of the connecting cable for the engine oil pump valve.
 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, guide tube to oil pan *BA01.45-P-1004-01E 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, guide tube to cylinder head/cylinder head cover/front cover *BA01.45-P-1005-01E 
24 Remove oil pan bottom section (1)   AR01.45-P-7500-04MM
IMPORTANT Notes on sealant path for oil pan bottom section (1).  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, oil pan bottom section to oil pan *BA01.45-P-1003-01E 
Loctite 5970 sealant *BR00.45-Z-1013-01A 
25 Remove screw plugs from oil pan (2) Vehicles with 4MATIC  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw plug to oil pan *BA01.45-P-1006-01E 
26 Remove screw/bolts (2a) from oil pan (2) IMPORTANT Pay attention to different lengths of screw/bolts.  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, oil pan to crankcase/timing case cover/rear end cover *BA01.45-P-1001-01E 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, oil pan to crankcase at transmission end *BA01.45-P-1002-01E 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, automatic transmission to engine *BA27.40-P-1008-01A 
27 Release oil pan (2) from cylinder crankcase (4) and remove to rear   AR01.45-P-7500-04MM
IMPORTANT Notes on sealant path for oil pan   AH01.45-P-0001-01MMB
    IMPORTANT Apply sealant to sealing surface of oil pan (2) and, in doing so, observe notes on sealant path on the oil pan (2).  
    Loctite 5970 sealant *BR00.45-Z-1013-01A 
28 Remove oil level check switch Engine 278, for replacing the oil pan (2) AR18.40-P-5113MM
29 Remove lower guide tube for oil dipstick guide tube (5) Vehicles without 4MATIC, for replacing the oil pan (2)  
CLEAN Clean     
30 Clean sealing surfaces on oil pan (2) and cylinder crankcase (4)   AR01.00-P-0050-01A
Loctite 7200 *BR00.45-Z-1038-04A 
Loctite 7063 cleaning spray (150 ml) *BR00.45-Z-1046-04A 
31 Install in the reverse order    
INSPECT Check     
32 Check engine oil level; correct if necessary    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   ENGINE 157 in MODEL 216, 221 AP18.00-P-0101EWG
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   ENGINE 278 in MODEL 216, 221 AP18.00-P-0101EL
DANGER Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
33 Carry out engine test run, checking the engine for leaktightness and proper operation
