REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts   AH00.00-N-0001-01A
NOTES Notes on bolted connections with self tapping screws   AH00.00-P-0007-01SF
    NOTES When working on the front-end assembly, be careful not to scratch, mark or notch the surfaces of aluminum parts. Otherwise the service life of the of the parts will be reduced.

IMPORTANT Notes on Active Body Control suspension   AH32.50-P-0001-01N
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only tighten nuts and bolts of chassis components when vehicle is in a ready-to-drive condition.    
1 Completely discharge all pressure in the front suspension struts using STAR DIAGNOSIS Vehicles with AIRmatic  
2 Deactivate easy entry/exit function Vehicles with code (275) Memory package (driver seat, steering column, mirrors) AR54.30-P-1000-02ESX
3 Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position and secure steering wheel with SPECIAL TOOL holding device. NOTES The steering wheel must not be turned when the steering coupling is detached, otherwise the clock spring contact will be destroyed.

4 Secure vehicle on vehicle lift   AR00.60-P-0100SX
5 Empty expansion reservoir of power steering using SPECIAL TOOL hand pump SPECIAL TOOL Hand pump Fig 10
6 Open hose clamp (2) and detach connecting line (3a) from return line (3b) IMPORTANT Seal the connections.

7 Remove nuts (1) and detach return line (3b) from longitudinal member    
8 Mount engine hoist   AR33.10-P-0105SX 
9 Remove bolts (1a) and raise engine TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 216 *BA22.10-P-1001-03C 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 221 *BA22.10-P-1001-03D 
10 Remove front wheels    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Remove/install wheels   AP40.10-P-4050SX
11 Detach tie rods (10a) from steering knuckles (5)   AR46.40-P-0200-02SX

12 Detach torque struts (18) from front axle carrier (31)   AR33.15-P-0160SX 
13 Detach spring control arm (17) from front axle carrier (31) Vehicles with AIRmatic AR33.15-P-0170SX 
14 Detach brake caliper from steering knuckle (5) Vehicles with code (487) Active Body Control (ABC)
NOTES Fasten brake caliper using a hook to the vehicle. The brake hose must not subjected to tension or be kinked otherwise it will be damaged.

15 Remove steering knuckle (5) Vehicles with code (487) Active Body Control (ABC)
IMPORTANT Do not remove front wheel hub from steering knuckle (5).

17 Detach link rods (23) from stabilizer bar (10) Vehicles with AIRmatic  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA32.20-P-1001-02O 
18 Detach stabilizer bar (10) from front axle carrier (31) and remove to rear Vehicles with AIRmatic
IMPORTANT The suspension strut does not have to be detached from the spring control arm (17).

19 Separate steering coupling (6)   AR46.10-P-8000SX
20 Disconnect electrical connector (4d) from solenoid valve (Y10)    
21 Detach retaining clamp (4a) from rack-and-pinion steering (4) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 221 with AIRmatic *BA46.30-P-1010-01F 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 221 with code 487 Active Body Control (ABC), except model 221.077/177 *BA46.30-P-1013-01N

22 Remove bolt (4b) and remove pressure line (4c) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 221 with AIRmatic *BA46.30-P-1012-01F

23 Remove bolts (15) and detach hydraulic line (17b) from front axle carrier (31) Vehicles with code 487 Active Body Control  
24 Detach the jack tube (19) from the front axle carrier (31)    
25 Prop front axle carrier (31) with transmission jack (01) and transmission platform (02) Transmission jack 2.0-7.0 t

26 Remove bolts (1d) from longitudinal members INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Install new bolts.  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA33.10-P-1001-01K 
27 Lower front axle carrier (31)    
28 Install in the reverse order    
29 Fill power steering pump and bleed   AR46.30-P-0010SX
30 Perform wheel alignment check   AR40.20-P-0200SX
