Antenna system (ATS), function - GF82.62-P-0001GZJ
MODEL 164.1/8 with CODE (498) Japan version up to Model Year 2008
Antenna overview, shown on model designation 164.1
Preliminary remarks
The following description explains the antenna systems for HIGH Class Japan (code 529).
It also explains the HF signal for the radio remote central locking (RRCL [FZV]), the HF signal for the Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS), and the HF signal for the telephony.
General information
The design of the antennas is adapted according to their special reception and transmission ranges.
A distinction is made between
- active antennas and
- passive antennas.
Antennas may be designed as
- transmitting antennas,
- receiving antennas or
- transmitting/receiving antennas
Antennas transmit or receive voice output by converting electromagnetic radio waves into electric voltages and vice versa.
Active antennas
Active antennas are supplied with power and have an integrated amplifier.
Power supply is possible using separate lines or with coaxial lines, over which the actual signals are transferred simultaneously. In this case, no separate lines are required for voltage supply.
Passive antennas
Passive antennas do not require a power supply.
Block diagram of antenna systems
Description, block diagram of antenna system
The signals received by the FM/AM/RRCL [FZV] antenna (AM, FM1, RRCL [FZV] and VICS) are filtered and amplified in the roof antenna module antenna amplifier.
The FM2 and FM3 antenna signals are picked up from the rear window by the FM rear window antenna amplifier and amplified. The FM signal (FM2 or FM3) required by the roof antenna module is transmitted to the roof antenna module. The voltage needed for the switchover is provided by the roof antenna module.
A diversity processor, which is activated by the IF feedback signal, selects the best of the three FM signals and transmits it to the antenna amplifier.
The AM signal, the best FM signal, and the VICS signal are supplied to the VICS antenna splitter where they are separated.
The VICS signal is routed to the COMAND operating, display and control unit, and the AM and FM signal to the audio gateway control unit, which is connected to the COMAND operating, display and control unit via MOST.
The RRCL [FZV] signal is demodulated in the roof antenna module, where it is additionally amplified and transmitted to the rear SAM control unit for further processing.
The telephone signals are transmitted and received by the telephone antenna. The telephone antenna is connected to the portable CTEL (A34/6) and the COMAND operating, display and control unit via the portable CTEL separation point, the telephone circuit 15C connector and the armrest telephone connector.
The signals received by the GPS antenna are directly relayed to the COMAND operating, display and control unit for processing.
The TV1 signal of the left side window antenna reaches the left antenna amplifier module, the TV4 signal of the right side window antenna reaches the right antenna amplifier module. The TV2 and TV3 signals of the rear window reach the TV rear window antenna amplifier. The amplified and filtered TV signals are send to the TV antenna selector.
A reference signal is generated in the COMAND operating, display and control unit to minimize reception interference. The reference signal is needed to actuate the TV antenna selector in a manner that ensures that the strongest TV antenna signal is transmitted to the COMAND operating, display and control unit (diversity function).
