Retrofit COMAND with APS navigation system - AN82.85-P-0003TD

IMPORTANT The fiber optic cable connector (MOST) (X39/50) is located in the rear cable duct, left of to the rear bench seat.

To perform step 22, check whether the fiber optic cable connector (MOST) (X39/50) is installed.

  Check     
1 Check control unit versions of MOST components IMPORTANT Make sure that an up-to-date replacement is available for the MOST components to be replaced in order to be able to operate the COMAND. AN82.85-P-0003-01T 
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory AD00.00-P-2000-04A
REMOVING Removal     
NOTES Information on preventing damage to electronic components due to electrostatic discharge   AH54.00-P-0001-01A
2.1 Remove all CDs from the CD changer IMPORTANT Vehicles with code 819 CD changer.  
3 Remove CD from Audio 20 CD radio    
DANGER Risk of explosion  caused by oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns  caused by swallowing battery acid. Risk of injury  caused by burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking. Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and glasses. Only pour battery acid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. AS54.10-Z-0001-01A
4 Disconnect battery ground line

5 Removing inside trim panel on side of cargo area IMPORTANT Left.
For vehicles without  one of the codes listed below:
  • 220, 404, 405, 433, 434, 475, 550 or 889 the trim is no longer required and must be replaced by a new one.

6 Remove covering under the left load compartment side inner paneling IMPORTANT For vehicles without  one of the codes listed below:
  • 220, 404, 405, 433, 434, 475, 550 or 889 the trim is no longer required and must be replaced by a new one.
 
7 Remove hazard warning triangle    
8 Remove SAM control unit with fuse and relay box in luggage compartment IMPORTANT Do not disconnect electrical connectors.

9 Remove rear passenger compartment side trim panel IMPORTANT Left.  
REFER TO TESTING & REPAIR AR68.30-P-4780T
10.1 Remove hands-free system control unit IMPORTANT Only remove the hands-free system control unit if it has an MB number, stated in the table of the document listed in step 1.  
REFER TO TESTING & REPAIR IMPORTANT Vehicles with code 380 Preinstallation for MB telephone "Cell phone", complete or with code 382 MB telephone "Cell phone" in armrest. AR82.70-P-8970TA
11.1 Remove car interface (portable CTEL) IMPORTANT Only remove the vehicle interface (portable CTEL) if it has an MB number, stated in the table of the document listed in step 1.  
REFER TO TESTING & REPAIR IMPORTANT Vehicles with code 380, preinstallation for MB telephone "Cell phone", complete or with code 382 MB telephone "Cell phone" in armrest. AR82.70-P-8920TA
12.1 Remove CD changer IMPORTANT Only remove the CD changer if it has an MB number, stated in the table of the document listed in step 1.

13 Remove radio IMPORTANT The Audio 20 CD radio is no longer required.

14 Remove instrument cluster

15 Remove front floor covering (left)    
REFER TO TESTING & REPAIR AR68.20-P-2050T
16 Remove trim on left B-pillar IMPORTANT Undo in lower area far enough until the cable duct is accessible.  
REFER TO TESTING & REPAIR AR68.30-P-4700T
17 Open left wiring ducts    
INSTALLING Install     
18 Retrofit antenna for global positioning system (GPS) IMPORTANT Vehicles without  code 596 heat-insulating glass. AN82.61-P-7474-04TTS 
19 Install in the reverse sequence IMPORTANT Operation steps 11.1 and 10.1.  
20 Retrofit audio gateway control unit IMPORTANT Use new audio gateway control unit for COMAND APS (with navigation) (Code 527). AN82.61-P-0001-07TA 
21 Retrofit wiring harness. IMPORTANT Wiring harness for COMAND. AN82.61-P-0001-01TGG 
22 Retrofit MOST fiber optic cable wiring harness IMPORTANT MOST fiber optic cable wiring harness for COMAND.
NOTESRisk of breakage!  Do not kink fiber optic cable and do not route over sharp edges or bend in radii smaller than 25 mm. Tensile forces on inserts must not exceed 65 N. Do not squeeze fiber optic cable and do not compress with clamps or cable ties.

23 Retrofit MOST fiber optic cable wiring harness IMPORTANT MOST fiber optic cable wiring harness for CD changer.
IMPORTANT Vehicles with  code 819 CD changer.
NOTESRisk of breakage!  Do not kink fiber optic cable and do not route over sharp edges or bend in radii smaller than 25 mm. Tensile forces on inserts must not exceed 65 N. Do not squeeze fiber optic cable and do not compress with clamps or cable ties.

24 Extend fiber optic cable ring for components to be retrofitted IMPORTANT MOST fiber optic cable for navigation processor.

25 Retrofit wiring harness. IMPORTANT Wiring harness for navigation processor. AN82.61-P-0001-01TCC 
26 Retrofit antenna line IMPORTANT AM/FM antenna line. AN82.62-P-0001-04TC 
27 Install SAM control unit with fuse and relay box into luggage compartment

28 Retrofitting navigation processor in trunk IMPORTANT Vehicles with  one of the following codes:
  • 220, 475 or 889.

29 Install side paneling in rear passenger compartment IMPORTANT Left.

30 Cut out side paneling in trunk   AN68.30-P-0002-02TB
31 Install inner paneling on side of load compartment IMPORTANT Left.  
REFER TO TESTING & REPAIR AR68.30-P-1180T
32 Install hazard warning triangle    
33 Install in the reverse order IMPORTANT Steps 17 up to 14.  
34 Install COMAND operating, display and controller unit IMPORTANT Wrap felt tape around vehicle on-board AM/FM antenna line and on-board fiber optic cable for Audio 20 CD and strap down in center console (no longer required).

35.1 Install CD changer IMPORTANT Vehicles with CD changer (code 819).
IMPORTANT Only install the CD changer if it was removed in step 12.1. Use new retrofitted fiber optic cable.

36 Connect ground cable to battery

37 Perform basic programming

38.1 Flash MOST components IMPORTANT Flash those MOST components that do not have the latest software release.

39 Perform retrofit variant coding IMPORTANT After completing the variant coding, perform a quick test and delete the fault memory. AN82.61-P-0001-05TB 
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory AD00.00-P-2000-04A
40 Perform function check of COMAND    
41 Add special equipment to the vehicle data card and to the online vehicle data card IMPORTANT Enter code 527 COMAND APS (with navigation) and delete code 523 MB Audio 20 radio CD. Delete old radio identification number and enter new one.
