Removing/installing hydraulic valve clearance compensation elements - AR05.00-P-2011GZ (ML500)

REMOVINGINSTALLING Removing/installing    
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by fingers being jammed or pinched when removing, installing or aligning hoods, doors, trunk lid/ rear-end door or sliding roof. When moving components, ensure that no body parts or limbs are within the operating range of moving parts. AS00.00-Z-0011-01A
1 Open engine hood and raise to vertical position   AR88.40-P-1000GZ
2 Remove cylinder head covers (6)   AR01.20-P-5014GZ
3 Set crankshaft to a 40° crank angle after ignition TDC on cylinder 1 and check the engine timing NOTES The engine must not be turned backwards otherwise the timing chain can get jammed. AR05.10-P-6858GZ 
4 Remove chain tensioner (5)   AR05.10-P-7800GZ 
5   Remove the left camshaft bearing bridge (7) and the right camshaft bearing bridge (8) AR05.20-P-7103GZ 
    IMPORTANTInstallation:  Check basic position of camshafts, if required: ↓ AR05.10-P-6858GZ 
    Set the basic position of camshafts AR05.20-P-6020GZ 
6 Press clearance compensation element (11) of the related cylinder with a drift (2 mm diameter) out of the roller-type rocker arm (9) NOTES Do not use a magnet!
The slide surface of the compensation element (11) would get magnetized. This can cause minute iron chips to accumulate, which in turn can damage the compensation element (11) and the cam.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  the small plate (10) at the top of the roller-type rocker arm (9) must point to the compensation element with the slits facing downwards (11). Compensation elements which have not been replaced, must be reinstalled at the same point.
 
7 Install in reverse order
