Telephoning with the portable CTEL (A34/6)

A UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface) (A34/15) is integrated in the driver information system. In order to be able to use this function, the user must insert a portable CTEL (A34/6) that is compatible with the Japanese cellular telephone system (Personal Digital Cellular (PDC)) into the preinstalled UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface) (A34/15) and have an external antenna installed (dealer option). The UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface) (A34/15) is accommodated in the telephone compartment of the center console under the armrest and connects the portable CTEL (A34/6) directly with the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3).

The display and selection follow on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) or the portable CTEL (A34/6).

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) stores and manages the telephone books and it also organizes all service and e-mail data.

In addition to the telephone features, the service functions of Internet (with e-mail), 24 h service and i-mode are available. The driver has the option of telephoning with the portable CTEL (A34/6) (private mode) and hands-free (hands-free mode). The functions are displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1), in the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) and in the display of the portable CTEL (A34/6).

Telephone functions on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3):

Number memory:

For hands-free, there is the option of selecting and controlling the functions offered on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) or using the steering wheel operation in dialogue with the menus shown in the displays. Text input, such as for e-mail is performed directly on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3).

Internet

The user has Internet access via the portable CTEL (A34/6). A prerequisite for this is an Internet-capable PDC cellular phone. In order to be able to use i-mode, which is widespread in Japan, the portable CTEL (A34/6) must also support the i-mode data exchange protocol. The Internet functionalities (operation, management, display, etc.) run on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3).

Internet functions:

Mail to, Phone to, Navi to, Automatic Dialing, i-mode Search, Push-Service

E-mail

E-mails can be sent and received via the inserted portable CTEL and the data adjusted in the provider setup. The user can operate the system using the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3).

E-mail functions:

Voice Control System

The voice control system is intended to assist the driver during a journey by giving him/her access to a series of functions, without diverting his/her attention from the road, and by enabling him/her to have intuitive control of the functions. This function is controlled using the software integrated in the operating unit.

The user can activate the voice control using the VCS [SBS] switch (S93/2). A signal, generated in the operating unit, sounds when the VCS [SBS] (voice control system) is operational. After that, the user can enter into a dialog with the system. The system, however, only supports the Japanese language.

The following components can be controlled via the VCS:

If problems occur with the command input by the user, the system responds with an appropriate command. This is generated in the operating unit and output via the audio gateway control unit (N93/1).
