Switch on characteristics
Navigation system activation
If the driver's door is opened the CAN (A40/3-A1) automatically activates the navigation system . This process lasts approximately 2 s and may be accompanied by the noise of the CD ROM drive integrated into the navigation computer . The COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) display remains switched off:
If as a consequence no change is registered in the ignition and starter switch (e. g. terminal 15C or 15R, ON), the navigation system remains active for a further 30 min.
Activating the overall system
By turning the ignition and starter switch roughly to the 20° position (terminal 15C, ON) all further subsystems are activated, at position 1 (terminal 15 R, ON) the display is switched on , insofar as COMAND was active prior to the last time that the keys were withdrawn. COMAND is now operational.
The system active before the last switch off (e. g. radio) is switched on and the corresponding basic menu displayed.
If COMAND was switched off for longer than 30 min, a warning menu appears with general information on how to use the system.
Conduct when pushing "ON" button
COMAND can also be switched on when the transmitter key (A8/1) has been pulled out , by pressing the "ON" button . All COMAND functions are then available for approximately 30 min. After 30 min COMAND is automatically switched off.
If after approximately 30 min a switch off has taken place, the system can be switched back on again by pressing the "ON" button . The 30 min cycle starts up again from the beginning.
Switch off characteristics
COMAND is deactivated when the ignition key (terminal 15C, OFF) is pulled out of the ignition. After this the navigation system goes into an run-out time of approximately 30 minutes ("standby mode"). During this period all the important locating parameters are stored.
Furthermore, the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3n1) is in principle always in standby mode, when the CAN interior is active.
Pressing the "Monitor" button only causes the monitor to switch between the day, night and off modes.
Switch off characteristics at undervoltage
The COMAND central computer constantly monitors the battery voltage. Depending on the voltage value the system will act as follows:
- Battery voltage is between 11.5 and 9.5 Volts (battery warning area)
If the battery voltage drops below 11.5 Volts a message appears in the display requesting to switch the engine on.
If the engine is not started up, yet another warning is issued after roughly 3 minutes have elapsed indicating that approximately only 10 s remain to switch the engine on before the system is run down.
In this case switching on the engine prevents the system from being automatically shut down.
If the system has been run down and the voltage reading rises once again above 11.5 V, COMAND remains as it was namely off .
If a system has been shut down it can still be switched back on again manually. The warning procedure recurs each time anew until the fault has been rectified.
- Battery voltage below 9.5 Volts (undervoltage) COMAND is automatically put into a predefined standby condition, in which only the battery voltage continues to be monitored . In addition to this the current operating status is stored. COMAND cannot be operated in this state, nor is it accessible via Star diagnostics . Communication with external components does not take place.
