The telephone system can be operated as follows:

The audio source is automatically muted during a telephone call. There are different telephone versions (e.g. portable cellular telephone, permanently installed telephone, version in combination with TELE AID  ). The portable cellular telephone version (code 317)  is described in detail in the following.

The radio telephone signals are transmitted and received by the CTEL and GPS roof antenna (A2/49)  telephone component. When the telephone is in the ready status the display of the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3)  shows the reception field strength in 5 stages.

With all versions transmission of the control and audio signals (e.g. loudspeaker signals when the hands-free system is activated), is accomplished via the digital data bus D2B.. The portable cellular telephone (A34/6)  therefore requires an interface to the D2B  -the D2B portable cellular telephone interface (A59/1)  .

The COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3n1)  has the following telephone functions:

Status  up to 31.05.01

With the new telephone generation (as of 06/00) additional services will be possible:

The party called can connect the calling party and thus terminate the call.

The functions" Call waiting  " and "Line alternation  " must be enabled by the provider.

IMPORTANT The letters below the numbers of the number pad are presently disabled (status 04/00).

It will be possible to send short messages (SMS) with the COMAND at a later time.

Writing/processing SMS  is only possible when SMS messages  are present in the buffer. Enter the characters with the " speller  " or with 12 key keypad (analog to the portable cellular telephone). The letters on the number pad are enabled  .

This function also includes transmitting  the SMS  , the receiver  can be specified or selected from the telephone book.
