Installation [09/2015 - ]: Procedure

  1. INSTALL TIMING CHAIN COVER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the 2 new oil pump gaskets and oil hole cover gasket.
    2. Install the 2 oil pump gaskets and oil hole cover gasket to the stiffening crankcase assembly.
    3. Align the positions of the drive rotor spline and crankshaft timing sprocket as shown in the illustration.

    4. Apply a coating of seal packing to the timing chain cover assembly at the points shown in the illustration.

      *a 7.0 mm (0.276 in.) or more *b 3.0 mm (0.118 in.) or more
      *c 13.0 mm (0.512 in.) or more *d 28 mm (1.10 in.)

      Seal packing

      Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, Three Bond 1207B or equivalent.

      NOTE:
      • Using non-residue solvent, clean and remove any oil from the installation surface.
      • Install the part within 3 minutes and tighten the bolts within 10 minutes after applying seal packing.
      • Do not add engine oil for at least 2 hours after installation.
      • Do not start the engine within 2 hours after installation.
    5. Temporarily install the timing chain cover assembly with the 2 nuts and 19 bolts.

      Bolt Length

      Bolt A 30 mm (1.18 in.) 8 mm (0.315 in.)
      Bolt B 35 mm (1.38 in.) 10 mm (0.394 in.)
      NOTE:

      Do not apply oil to bolts. Clean off if any oil is applied to bolts.

      When tightening the 16th bolt shown in the illustration, be careful not to damage the installation surface of the crankshaft position sensor.

    6. Tighten the 19 bolts and 2 nuts in several steps, in the sequence shown in the illustration.

      Bolts A, nut 

      Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) 

      Bolt B 

      Torque: 55 N*m (561 kgf*cm, 41 ft.*lbf) 

  2. INSTALL TRANSVERSE ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET 
    1. Temporarily install the transverse engine mounting bracket with the 4 bolts.

    2. Tighten the 4 bolts in the order shown in the illustration.

      Torque: 55 N*m (561 kgf*cm, 41 ft.*lbf) 

      NOTE:

      After applying seal packing to the timing chain cover assembly, install the transverse engine mounting bracket within 10 minutes.

  3. INSTALL TIMING GEAR CASE OR TIMING CHAIN CASE OIL SEAL 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 1 [10/2014 - ]

  4. INSTALL CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 1 [10/2014 - ]

  5. INSTALL CRANKSHAFT PULLEY ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 47 [09/2015 - ]

  6. INSTALL V-RIBBED BELT TENSIONER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Temporarily install the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly with the 2 bolts.

    2. Tighten the bolt A.

      Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) 

    3. Tighten the bolt B.

      Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) 

  7. INSTALL IDLER PULLEY SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the idler pulley sub-assembly to the timing chain cover assembly with the bolt.

      Torque: 43 N*m (438 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf) 

  8. INSTALL CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL SOLENOID ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 1 [10/2014 - ]

  9. INSTALL FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 1 [10/2014 - ]

  10. INSTALL CYLINDER HEAD COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    NOTE:

    Be sure not to disconnect the PCV hose or the No. 4 PCV hose from the cylinder head cover sub-assembly.

    1. Apply a light coat of engine oil to 2 new gaskets and 2 camshaft position sensor.
    2. Install the 2 gaskets to the No. 1 camshaft bearing cap and No. 2 camshaft bearing cap.
    3. Install the cylinder head cover gasket and No. 2 cylinder head cover gasket to the cylinder head cover sub-assembly.
    4. Apply seal packing as shown in the illustration.

      Seal packing

      Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, Three Bond 1207B or equivalent

      Standard seal diameter

      2.0 to 3.0 mm (0.0787 to 0.118 in.)

      NOTE:
      • Remove any oil from the contact surface.
      • Install the cylinder head cover sub-assembly within 3 minutes and tighten the bolts within 15 minutes after applying seal packing.
      • Do not add engine oil for at least 2 hours after installation.
      • Do not start the engine within 2 hours after installation.

      *a Application Width: 8.0 mm (0.315 in.)
      *b Application Width: 5.0 mm (0.197 in.)
      *c Seal Diameter: 2.0 to 3.0 mm (0.0787 to 0.118 in.)

    5. Temporarily install the 21 bolts and 2 camshaft position sensor to the cylinder head cover sub-assembly.
    6. Tighten the 21 bolts and 2 camshaft position sensor in the order shown in the illustration.

      Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf)

      NOTE:
      • When reusing the camshaft position sensor, check the O-rings.
      • Make sure that the O-ring is not cracked or jammed when installing it on the cylinder head cover sub-assembly.
      • Replace with a new part if it is dropped or if it receives a strong impact.
  11. CONNECT ENGINE WIRE 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 20 [10/2014 - 09/2017] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 20 [09/2017 - ]

  12. CONNECT NO. 2 VACUUM TRANSMITTING HOSE ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 14 [09/2015 - ]

  13. CONNECT VACUUM TRANSMITTING HOSE ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 11 [09/2015 - ]

  14. INSTALL NO. 2 PCV HOSE 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 10 [09/2015 - ]

  15. TEMPORARILY INSTALL NO. 1 FUEL PIPE SUB-ASSEMBLY (for High Pressure) 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 2 [09/2015 - 09/2017] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 2 [09/2017 - ]

  16. INSTALL FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY (for High Pressure) 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 3 [09/2015 - 09/2017] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 3 [09/2017 - ]

  17. TIGHTEN NO. 1 FUEL PIPE SUB-ASSEMBLY (for High Pressure) 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 4 [09/2015 - 09/2017] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 4 [09/2017 - ]

  18. INSTALL BRACKET 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 6 [09/2015 - 09/2017] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 6 [09/2017 - ]

  19. INSTALL FUEL PUMP PROTECTOR 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 7 [09/2015 - 09/2017] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 7 [09/2017 - ]

  20. INSTALL NO. 2 WATER BY-PASS PIPE 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 15 [09/2015 - ]

  21. INSTALL IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 2 [10/2014 - ]

  22. INSTALL ENGINE AND TRANSAXLE 

    Refer to INSTALLATION [10/2014 - 05/2019] , or refer to INSTALLATION [05/2019 - ]
