Noise, Vibration And Harshness

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE: As the checks suggested here are open to interpretation, they should be used as a guide only. Descriptions of noises, etc, are in general terms, so depend on a degree of experience on the part of the technician.
SYMPTOM POSSIBLE CAUSES ACTION
Squeaking, creaking or squealing from front of engine
  • Balance shaft worn
  • Accessory drive
  • Accessory drive tensioner
  • Accessory drive driven components
  • For SDD vehicles GO to PINPOINT TEST B .
  • For pathfinder vehicles GO to PINPOINT TEST A .
  • Refer to the relevant article of the repair information and check the accessory drive. Rectify as necessary
Whine, slap or growl from front of engine
  • Balance shaft worn
  • Accessory drive
  • Accessory drive tensioner
  • Accessory drive driven components
  • For SDD vehicles GO to PINPOINT TEST B .
  • For pathfinder vehicles GO to PINPOINT TEST A .
  • Refer to the relevant article of the repair information and check the accessory drive. Rectify as necessary
Rattle/ticking from top of engine
  • Valve gear noise
  • Camshaft bearing noise
  • Camshaft chain noise
  • Chain drive tensioner noise
  • Vacuum pump noise
  • High pressure fuel pump noise
  • Chain drive tensioner worn GO to PINPOINT TEST C .
  • Perform an engine oil pressure test. Check the operation of the hydraulic tappets and the condition of the camshaft. Check the camshaft bearings, chains and tensioners. Check the vacuum pump. Check the high pressure fuel pump. Rectify as necessary
Knock from lower half of engine (often worse with a cold engine)
  • Piston slap
  • Gudgeon pin noise
  • Connecting rod bearing noise
  • Perform an engine oil pressure test. Check pistons, cylinder bores, piston pins and connecting rod bearings for excessive wear. Rectify as necessary
Knock or rumble from lower half of engine (often worse on overrun)
  • Main bearing noise
  • Perform an engine oil pressure test. Check connecting rod bearing for excessive wear. Rectify as necessary
Misfire or rough running
  • Engine management system
  • Fuel charging and controls
  • Exhaust gas recirculation system
  • Valves burnt or sticking
  • Valve guides worn
  • Cylinder bores/piston rings worn
  • Piston rings broken
  • Piston rings broken
  • Refer to the relevant article of the repair information and check the engine management system, fuel charging and controls and the exhaust gas recirculation system. Perform an engine oil pressure test. Check for excessive wear in engine components. Rectify as necessary
Rattle during engine starting and stopping
  • Dual mass flywheel defective due to internal failure
Clutch judder
  • Dual mass flywheel defective due to high thermal load
Flywheel flange misaligned with flywheel to crankshaft bolts
  • The internal torque limiter has been active. This does not indicate a defect
  • No action required
Excessive vibration of the vehicle when stationary with the engine at idle
  • Active engine mount system vacuum lines damaged or leaking
  • Left active engine mount failure
  • Right active engine mount failure
  • Active engine mount system solenoid circuit, short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
  • Active engine mount system solenoid internal failure
  • GO to PINPOINT TEST E .
  • Inspect electrical connectors for signs of water ingress, and pins for damage and/or corrosion
