Pinpoint Test A: Pathfinder Vehicles - Balance Shaft Noise Diagnosis
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE:
Compare the engine noise to the example animation sound file E260166 below of a balance shaft whine.
- A1: BALANCE SHAFT NOISE
- Remove the accessory drive belt and confirm if the engine noise can still be heard. Refer to: ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT
- If the engine noise is still present continue to step 3. If the noise is no longer present, continue diagnosis REFER to: ACCESSORY DRIVE
- Make sure the hood is left open.
- Make sure the drivers door is left open.
- Switch ignition on.
- Make sure the vehicle is in PARK for automatic transmissions, and NEUTRAL for manual transmission.
- Increase the vehicles Revolutions Per Minute (RPM) in a controlled manner slowly increasing the RPM up to 1800. When increasing the engine RPM to the target speed of 1800, listen for signs of irregular high pitched engine whine noise.
- Hold the engine RPM at 1800. Listen for signs of irregular high pitched engine whine noise.
- Take the pressure off the accelerator and let the engine RPM spool down back to idle. Listen for signs of irregular high pitched engine whine noise.
- Repeat the engine rev up, hold and then spool down assessment steps for the additional target engine speed of 2500 RPM
. Listen for signs of irregular high pitched engine whine noise at all steps of revving.
If irregular high pitched engine whine is detected, confirm if noise follows revving of the engine?
Yes: If the engine whine noise sound follows closely to the driver input and revving of the engine. Replace the balance shafts REFER to: BALANCE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
No: If the engine whine noise sound is delayed in any way from the driver input when increasing or decreasing rev's of the engine. Continue diagnosis Refer to: TURBOCHARGER
