Valve Timing: Installation

CAUTION:

Engine assembly requires the use of a unique sealant that is compatible with engine oil. Using a sealant other than Mopar® Engine Sealant RTV Silicone Rubber Adhesive may result in engine fluid leakage.

CAUTION:

Following the application of Mopar® Engine Sealant RTV Silicone Rubber Adhesive to the gasket surfaces, the components must be assembled within 10 minutes and the attaching fasteners must be tightened to specification within the next 10 minutes. Prolonged exposure to the air prior to assembly may result in engine fluid leakage.

Clean the timing cover sealing surfaces with isopropyl alcohol in preparation for sealant application.

Apply Mopar® Engine Sealant RTV Silicone Rubber Adhesive as shown in illustration at the cylinder head to block parting line (1 and 2).

Apply Mopar® Engine Sealant RTV Silicone Rubber Adhesive as shown in illustration at the ladder frame to block parting line (1 and 2).
Apply 2 mm bead of Mopar® Mopar® Axle RTV MS-GF46 to the engine block and cylinder head to timing cover mating surfaces as shown in illustration. Be sure to apply a bead at the two center bolt lands that are between the timing chain.

Install timing chain cover (1) upwards from under the vehicle.

Install the timing chain cover retaining bolts. Tighten six M6 bolts (2) to 9 N.m (80 in. lbs.), two M8 bolts (3) and one studbolt (1) to 26 N.m (19 ft. lbs.) and five M10 bolts (4) to 65 N.m (48 ft. lbs.).
Install a new front crankshaft seal if necessary. Refer to INSTALLATION .
Install the right engine mount. Refer to INSTALLATION .
Install the coolant reservoir bottle. Tighten the bolt to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

Install the water pump pulley (5) and tighten the three bolts (6) to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
Install the crankshaft damper (4). Refer to INSTALLATION .
Install the accessory drive belt tensioner (2). Refer to TENSIONER, BELT, INSTALLATION .
Install the accessory drive belt idler pulley (3). Refer to PULLEY, IDLER, INSTALLATION .
Install the accessory drive belt (1). Refer to BELT, SERPENTINE, INSTALLATION .
Remove the oil pan and clean the oil pan sealing surfaces with isopropyl alcohol in preparation for sealant application.
Install the oil pan. Refer to INSTALLATION .
Install the right lower splash shield. Refer to INSTALLATION .

Install the cylinder head cover and ignition coils. Refer to INSTALLATION .
Install the air cleaner body. Refer to INSTALLATION .
Install the resonator.
Install the engine cover.
If removed, install the oil filter and fill the engine crankcase with the proper oil to the correct level. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
Connect the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), connect the IBS connector to the negative battery cable.
Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature. Check cooling system for possible leaks and correct fluid level. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

NOTE:

The Cam/Crank Variation Relearn procedure must be performed using the scan tool anytime there has been a repair/replacement made to a powertrain system, for example: flywheel, valvetrain, camshaft and/or crankshaft sensors or components.
