Test 8B - Repairing Headlight Circuit

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see Figure .
NOTE: Perform TEST 8A  before proceeding.
  1. Switch headlights on to high beam. If high beam headlights do not come on, see the STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article in the ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT Section for repair. If high beam headlights come on, leave high beam headlights on and disconnect VTA relay. See VEHICLE THEFT ALARM MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Also, see Figure . Inspect connector, clean and repair as needed.
  2. Using DRB in voltmeter mode, check VTA relay output voltage at VTA relay receptacle terminal No. 2 (Red/Orange wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open VTA relay output (Red/Orange wire). Perform TEST VER-1A  . If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  3. Using DRB in voltmeter mode, check fused battery feed circuit voltage at VTA relay receptacle terminal No. 1 (Light Green/Black wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to TEST 8C  . If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  4. Using DRB in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of relay ground at VTA relay receptacle terminal No. 3 (Black wire). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open VTA relay ground circuit (Black wire). Perform TEST VER-1A  . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  5. Ensure ignition is off and disconnect VTA module. See Figure in TEST 1A and see VEHICLE THEFT ALARM MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect connector, clean and repair as needed. Using DRB in voltmeter mode, check fused battery feed circuit voltage at VTA module connector terminal No. 21 (Light Green/Black wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open fused battery feed circuit (Light Green/Black wire). Perform TEST VER-1A  .
  6. Using DRB in voltmeter mode, check fused battery feed circuit voltage at VTA module connector terminal No. 9 (Black/Tan wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to TEST 8D  . If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  7. Using DRB in ohmmeter mode, check resistance at VTA module connector terminal No. 14 (Tan/Pink wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in VTA relay control circuit (Tan/Pink wire). Perform TEST VER-1A  . If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  8. Using external ohmmeter, check resistance between VTA relay control receptacle terminal No. 5 (Tan/Pink wire) and VTA module connector terminal No. 14 (Tan/Pink wire). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open VTA relay control circuit (Tan/Pink wire). Perform TEST VER-1A  . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  9. Connect VTA relay. Connect jumper wire between VTA module connector terminals No. 21 (Light Green/Black wire) and No. 14 (Tan/Pink wire). If headlights come on, replace VTA module. See VEHICLE THEFT ALARM MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Perform TEST VER-1A  . If headlights do not come on, replace VTA relay. See Figure in TEST 1A. Perform TEST VER-1A  .
