Pinpoint Test L: Even Clutch Pressure Control Solenoids

  1. Refer to TRANSMISSION CONTROLS - TR9070 for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    The TR9070 uses 2 clutches, the even clutch and the odd clutch, to transmit engine power to the gearbox. Each clutch directs power to 4 gears in the transmission. The clutches are controlled by hydraulic pressure from the clutch control valve body. Pressure control solenoid "B", also called the even clutch pressure control valve (ECPV), and pressure control solenoid "D", also called the even redundant shut-off valve (ERSV), are used to engage and disengage the odd gear clutch. Pressure control solenoid "G", also called the even clutch cooling flow control valve (ECFV), controls fluid flow to the transmission fluid cooler. All 3 even clutch control valves receive power from the TCM through the transmission solenoid power control 2 (TSPC2) circuit. The TCM controls each solenoid through dedicated low side drivers.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    TCM P0964:00 Pressure Control Solenoid 'B' Control Circuit/Open: No Sub Type Information The TCM sets this DTC when it detects an open in the even clutch pressure control valve (ECPV) circuit.
    TCM P0966:00 Pressure Control Solenoid 'B' Control Circuit Low: No Sub Type Information The TCM sets this DTC when it detects an open or a short to ground in the even clutch pressure control valve (ECPV) circuit.
    TCM P0967:00 Pressure Control Solenoid 'B' Control Circuit High: No Sub Type Information The TCM sets this DTC when it detects a short to power in the even clutch pressure control valve (ECPV) circuit.
    TCM P2718:00 Pressure Control Solenoid 'D' Control Circuit/Open: No Sub Type Information The TCM sets this DTC when it detects an open in the even redundant shut-off valve (ERSV) circuit.
    TCM P2720:00 Pressure Control Solenoid 'D' Control Circuit Low: No Sub Type Information The TCM sets this DTC when it detects an open or a short to ground in the even redundant shut-off valve (ERSV) circuit.
    TCM P2721:00 Pressure Control Solenoid 'D' Control Circuit High: No Sub Type Information The TCM sets this DTC when it detects a short to power in the even redundant shut-off valve (ERSV) circuit.
    TCM P2812:00 Pressure Control Solenoid 'G' Control Circuit/Open: No Sub Type Information The TCM sets this DTC when it detects an open in the even clutch cooling flow control valve (ECFV) circuit.
    TCM P2814:00 Pressure Control Solenoid 'G' Control Circuit Low: No Sub Type Information The TCM sets this DTC when it detects an open or a short to ground in the even clutch cooling flow control valve (ECFV) circuit.
    TCM P2815:00 Pressure Control Solenoid 'G' Control Circuit High: No Sub Type Information The TCM sets this DTC when it detects a short to power in the even clutch cooling flow control valve (ECFV) circuit.

    Possible Sources 

    • Circuit open or shorted
    • TCM
    • Transmission

  2. L1 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION SOLENOID POWER CONTROL 2 (TSPC2) CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect Transmission C1575B .

    • Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes  GO to  L5
    No  GO to  L2
  3. L2 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION SOLENOID POWER CONTROL 2 (TSPC2) CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  L3
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  4. L3 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION SOLENOID POWER CONTROL 2 (TSPC2) CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new TCM. REFER to: Transmission Control Module (TCM) 
    No  GO to  L4
  5. L4 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION SOLENOID POWER CONTROL 2 (TSPC2) CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE TRANSMISSION DISCONNECTED

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect Transmission C1575A .

    • Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new transmission. REFER to: Transmission 
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  6. L5 CHECK THE EVEN CLUTCH CONTROL VALVE CONTROL CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.

    • For the even clutch pressure control valve (ECPV), measure:

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms on the suspect circuit? 

    Yes  GO to  L6
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  7. L6 CHECK THE EVEN CLUTCH CONTROL VALVE CONTROL CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • For the even clutch pressure control valve (ECPV), measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms on the suspect circuit? 

    Yes  GO to  L7
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  8. L7 CHECK THE EVEN CLUTCH CONTROL VALVE CONTROL CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE TRANSMISSION POWER CIRCUITS

    Are the resistances greater than 10, 000 ohms on the suspect circuit? 

    Yes  GO to  L8
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  9. L8 RECHECK THE TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) FOR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Connect all connectors that have been disconnected. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the TCM.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Wait 10 seconds.

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the TCM self-test.

    Did the DTC return? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new transmission. REFER to: Transmission 
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
