Cylinder Head: Installation
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Dodge Stratus and 2005 Chrysler Sebring. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
The cylinder head bolts are tightened using a torque plus angle procedure. The bolts must be examined BEFORE reuse. If the threads are necked down the bolts must be replaced. See Fig 1
Necking can be checked by holding a straight edge against the threads. If all the threads do not contact the scale, the bolt must be replaced. See Fig 1

CAUTION:
When cleaning cylinder head and cylinder block surfaces, DO NOT use a metal scraper because the surfaces could be cut or ground. Use ONLY a wooden or plastic scraper.
- Clean sealing surfaces of cylinder head and block (Refer to ENGINE - STANDARD PROCEDURE) .
- Install new head gasket over locating dowels.
- Install cylinder head to block, assuring head is properly positioned over locating dowels.
- Lubricate bolt threads with clean engine oil and install bolts.
- Tighten bolts in sequence shown in Fig 2, using the following steps and torque values:
- Step 1: Bolts 1-8 to 48 N.m (35 ft. lbs.)
- Step 2: Bolts 1-8 to 75 N.m (55 ft. lbs.)
- Step 3: Bolts 1-8 to 75 N.m (55 ft. lbs.)
- Step 4: Bolts 1-8 to +90° Turn Do not use a torque wrench for this step.
- Step 5: Bolts 9-11 to 28 N.m (250 in. lbs.)
- For left cylinder head installation:
- Install engine oil dipstick tube.
- Install generator.
- For right cylinder head removal:
- Install cylinder head ground strap.
- Connect EGR valve electrical connector (if equipped).
- Install all valvetrain components and camshafts (Refer to ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/CAMSHAFT(S) - INSTALLATION). Tighten camshaft bearing caps in sequence shown in Fig 3 to 12 N.m (105 in. lbs.).
- Install primary timing chain, guides and sprockets (Refer to ENGINE/VALVE TIMING/TIMING CHAIN AND SPROCKETS - INSTALLATION) .
- Install coolant outlet connector (Refer to COOLING/ENGINE/COOLANT OUTLET HOUSING - INSTALLATION) .
- Install cylinder head covers (Refer to ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/CYLINDER HEAD COVER(S) - INSTALLATION).
- Connect camshaft position sensor and crankshaft position sensor connectors.
- Install timing chain cover (Refer to ENGINE/VALVE TIMING/TIMING CHAIN COVER(S) - INSTALLATION).
- Install crankshaft vibration damper (Refer to ENGINE/ENGINE BLOCK/VIBRATION DAMPER - INSTALLATION) .
- Install lower and upper intake manifolds (Refer to ENGINE/MANIFOLDS/INTAKE MANIFOLD - INSTALLATION) .
- Connect oil pressure sensor connector. Install oil pressure sensor heat shield.
- Install catalytic converter(s) (Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM/CATALYTIC CONVERTER - INSTALLATION) .
- Install exhaust cross-under pipe (Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM/CROSS-OVER PIPE - INSTALLATION) .
- Install accessory drive belts (Refer to COOLING/ACCESSORY DRIVE/DRIVE BELTS - INSTALLATION) .
- Fill cooling system (Refer to COOLING/ENGINE - STANDARD PROCEDURE) .
- Connect negative cable to remote jumper terminal.
