Removal Procedure

  1. Place the hood in the service position. Refer to Hood Service Positioning
  2. Remove the front end upper tie bar support. Refer to Front End Upper Tie Bar Support Replacement
  3. Remove the air conditioning condenser. Refer to Air Conditioning Condenser Replacement (L96)
  4. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement

  6. Remove the radiator vent inlet hose (2) from the radiator inlet hose clip (3).
  7. Reposition the radiator vent inlet hose clamp (1) at the air bleed pipe.
  8. Remove the radiator vent inlet hose (2) from the air bleed pipe and reposition.

  10. Reposition the radiator inlet hose clamp (3) at the water pump.
  11. Remove the radiator inlet hose from the water pump.

  13. Reposition the radiator outlet hose clamp at the water pump.
  14. Remove the radiator outlet hose from the water pump.
  15. Remove the heater inlet hose. Refer to Heater Inlet Hose Replacement (L96)
  16. Remove the radiator surge tank outlet hose. Refer to Radiator Surge Tank Outlet Hose Replacement (L96)

  18. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector (1) from the oil pressure sensor.
  19. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector (2) from the lifter oil manifold.
  20. Remove the engine ground strap bolt from the cowl rear of the left cylinder head and reposition the ground strap.
  21. Remove the engine harness ground bolt from the right cylinder head and reposition the ground strap.
  22. Remove the negative battery cable terminal (2) and the engine harness ground (3) from the right cylinder head.
  23. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle

  25. Remove the engine harness clip (3) from the transmission oil cooler line bracket.

  27. Remove the transmission oil cooler line clip bolt from the oil pan, if equipped.

  29. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector (1) from the A/C refrigerant pressure sensor.
  30. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement (L96)

  32. Disconnect the coolant heater cord from the coolant heater, if equipped.
  33. Lower the vehicle.
  34. Remove the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement (L96)

  36. Remove the generator and power steering pump bracket bolts.
  37. Position the generator and power steering pump bracket (with power steering pump) aside.
  38. Remove the air conditioning compressor. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement (L96)

  40. Remove the transmission oil level indicator tube nut (1).

  42. Remove the transmission oil level indicator tube.
  43. Remove the negative battery cable fastener at the right side of the transmission bell housing and reposition the cable.
  44. Raise the vehicle.

  46. Remove the engine shield bolts and shield.

  48. Remove the oil pan skid plate bolts and plate, if equipped.
  49. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement 
  50. Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to Three-Way Catalytic Converter Replacement

  52. Remove the flywheel to torque converter bolts.
  53. Disconnect the bank two oxygen wire harness from the frame rail and cowl.
  54. Lower the transmission. Refer to Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (2WD)Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (4WD)
  55. Remove the transmission heat shield. Refer to Transmission Heat Shield Replacement
  56. Disconnect the transmission electrical connector at the transmission and position harness to the left side of the engine.
  57. Lower the vehicle.
  58. Detach the transmission harness at the back of the engine, position the transmission and bank two wiring harnesses on the engine.

  60. Remove the fuel/evaporative emission (EVAP) pipe bracket nut from the transmission stud (typical installation shown).
  61. Remove the fuel/EVAP pipe bracket from the stud. Reposition the bracket out of the way.

  63. Remove the transfer case vent hose bracket (2) nut from the stud, if equipped.
  64. Reposition the transfer case vent hose bracket and hose out of the way, if equipped.

  66. Remove the transmission bolts/studs.

  68. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the transmission and the clutch housing.
  69. If equipped with automatic transmission, install the crossmember. Refer to Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (2WD)Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (4WD)
  70. If equipped with automatic transmission, remove the two lower transmission to engine bolts.
  71. Lower the vehicle.
  72. Remove the ignition coil, as required for the proper fit of the EN-41798  engine lifting brackets before lifting the engine. Ignition Coil Replacement

  74. Remove the left side engine mount bracket bolts (1). Refer to Engine Mount Replacement - Left Side (Two Wheel Drive) Engine Mount Replacement - Left Side (Four Wheel Drive) 
  75. Remove the right side engine mount bracket bolts (1). Refer to Engine Mount Replacement - Right Side (Two Wheel Drive) Engine Mount Replacement - Right Side (Four Wheel Drive)

    CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

  77. Install the EN-41798  engine lifting brackets to the cylinder heads.

    Tighten 

    • Tighten the M8 engine lift bracket bolts to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
    • Tighten the M10 engine lift bracket bolts to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).
  78. If equipped with CNG, disconnect the two engine harness connectors at the left frame rail by the CNG control module.
  79. Disconnect the ECM electrical connectors. Refer to Engine Control Module Replacement
  80. Remove the right side front fender rear upper brace. Refer to Front Fender Rear Upper Brace Replacement
  81. Disconnect the lever lock connector at the underhood electrical center.
  82. If equipped, detach the vent hose from the wiring harness at the underhood center.

  84. Remove the underhood fuse block battery positive cable cover (1).
  85. Remove the battery positive cable fastener (2) and remove the battery positive cable (3)
  86. Remove the underhood electrical center. Refer to Underhood Electrical Center or Junction Block Replacement
  87. Detach the engine wiring harness from the underhood electrical center and position harness on engine.
  88. Position and install an engine hoist to the J-41798  engine lifting brackets.
  89. Install a floor jack under the transmission for support.
  90. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
  91. Install the EN-21366  converter holding strap to the transmission in order to hold the torque converter.
  92. Position and install the engine onto an engine stand.
  93. Remove the engine hoist. from the J-41798  engine lifting brackets.

  95. Remove the EN-41798  engine lifting brackets from the engine.
  96. Transfer parts as necessary.
