Replacing rear roof shell seal (M4 Convertible)

Special tools required: 

• 2 359 116
• 51 0 300

Installation note: 

• Screws with sealing compound must be replaced and must not  be reused
• Thread of nut must be cleaned beforehand

New parts required:

• Gasket
• Butyl rope dia. 4 mm

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

• Connect BATTERY CHARGER .
• Remove ROOFLINER .
• Move soft top into SERVICE POSITION .
• Bring vehicle to garage/workshop temperature

Release screws (1).

Release screw (2) with special tool 2 359 116.

Tightening torque 54 37 01AZ .

Pull seal off roof shell at rear.

On-the-job safety: 

• Comply with the relevant safety regulations

REMOVE  remnants of adhesive from roof shell.

Clean adhesive area with isohexane.

Air drying time: ≥ 1 minute

Once it has been cleaned, do not touch the adhesive area with bare hands.

Use 4 mm dia. butyl bead (see the applicable BMW parts catalogue).

Overview of butyl bead laying on roof shell, front: 

1. Apply butyl bead with dia. 4 mm ±1 mm with a length of at least 40 mm in sheet metal bead.
2. Apply butyl bead with dia. 4 mm ±1 mm above push pin bores.
3. Apply butyl bead with dia. 4 mm ±1 mm with a length of 70 mm in center of flange to roof shell.

Installation note: 

Press seal with trim strip (1) firmly onto roof shell.

Align screw fastening points to thread in roof shell.

Installation note: 

Press seal onto butyl bead

Pop in seal in marked area (1).

Installation note: 

For optimum securing of seal (2), press down entire upper area with special tool 51 0 300.

If necessary, use plastic hammer and impact protection.

Check retraction depth of window glass and adjust if necessary. Refer to ADJUSTING REAR LEFT OR RIGHT SIDE WINDOW (M4) .

Carry out leak test.
